Man runs down thief who grabbed 77-year-old`s purse: `I got him on the ground`
CHESTER, Va. A 77-year-old woman put her purse down in the front seat as she loaded into the backseat groceries she had just bought at the Kroger in Chester.
Meanwhile, Justin Watkins was inside Lowes picking up items for a construction job when he heard a loud commotion of people.
"We proceed to check out and while we're standing in this checkout line, people start hollerin' they're saying, stop stop stop he's got her purse, Watkins said.
Witnesses in the Kroger Parking lot chased the suspect, who ran inside Lowe's.
"I see them chasing the fellow across the parking lot, Watkins said, and he took off also.
"I chase him across the parking lot and I started gaining on him, Watkins recalled.
The suspect ran toward Rite-Aid with a gaggle of good Samaritans behind him. The suspect gets a car door open just as Watkins got to the car.
"I take the door and I mash him up against the car as hard as I can, Watkins said.
The suspect manages to get in the drivers seat, get the car started and put it into drive.
"I put my feet on the bottom of the door jam and I squeeze as hard as I can and I pulled him out of the car and got him on the ground and he was holding on tight enough that when I pulled him out he ripped the steering wheel cover off the steering wheel, Watkins said
Chesterfield County police arrest 20-year-old Devante Evans on one count of misdemeanor petty larceny.
Evans is being held in the Chesterfield County jail on a $4,000 dollar bond.
Police also said they appreciate citizens helping, but reminded citiznes to contact police first.
They also reminded shoppers to remain observant of their surroundings this holiday season.
"I think that's great and good for him and thank you for being a good citizen, said Beth Lucchesi, who heard the news.
Justin Watkins. Thank you Mr. Watkins. Carefull out there folks, thugs are working overtime this holiday season.
LOL. This is an easy one...
Atta go Justin!
The perp had the steering wheel cover in his hands! LOL.
Moving lumber around has made Justin strong!
“but reminded citiznes to contact police first.”
Remember - when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
Not dissing our fine LEOs, but sometimes you can’t wait and just have to take action. Attaboy, Mr. Watkins!
Probably a great reason for never naming your kid Devonte.
“but reminded citiznes to contact police first”
Nah! Git er done!
Exactly. With a name like that, no description of the perp is necessary.
Is it me or does this article read like a ten-year-old wrote it?
Lol, I know what you mean, there are several thugs with that name.
No, the story of the Good Samaritan is about someone in need who was ignored by all the 'proper, upright' people but was helped by a member of a group which was despised by Jesus' listeners.
In a modern USA context, the story could be retold to a cocktail party of MSM anchors as being about a white man with a mullet haircut, rural Southern accent, denim jacket with cut-off sleeves and driving a beat-up pickup truck with a big Confederate Battle Flag who spends his free time delivering Meals On Wheels to needy, elderly black folks. Who live along the route to the upscale restaurants favored by the attendees of that cocktail party.
In essence, "Identity Politics do not matter. Actions do."
So much for the Minute Men...
What a joke. The perp is escaping and the cops response is, "Call 911" and we'll be there in 25 minutes to take your report.
Some times you can't side with the cops.
Lock and load.
I have been there on a felony in progress at my home. The 911 dispatcher asked if I was armed (I confirmed that I was) and said the police would arrive in 15 minutes or so. Would they have been faster if I was unarmed? I suspect not.
Because when seconds count, LE is only minutes away!
Screw that.
God bless those good Samaritans!
And why aren't those charges aggravated? Targeting geezers doesn't rate aggravation in that jurisdiction?
I guess the good folks of VA just don’t understand that every time they vote for a Demonrat, they cast a vote for the thieves. Wait, what ? Oh, my bad . . . . .
A car came speeding through our neighborhood past the park where many children were playing. He sideswiped two parked cars, hit the curb and lost a wheel. I ran from the park to call 911, explaining what happened. THe 911 dispatcher said that someone would be there in about 30 minutes. I told her that she did not understand. The whole neighborhood had this guy in custody and I was afraid they might kill him. She said, “Oh, cool. Someone will be there in 3 minutes.”
Sounds like Devante thought it would be easy pickings snatching the purse of this elderly lady. Too bad for you, Devante, that Justin Watkins was in the area and put the smackdown on you.
Congratulations, Mr. Watkins.
