The College Football Playoff committee has spoken and Alabama is in over Ohio State as the fourth team and will play Clemson in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.
Bama-vs.-Ohio State was debated heavily following the conference championship games on Saturday. Ohio State had a conference championship and more impressive wins. But they also had something Alabama did not have, a second loss, an ugly 33-point debacle against Iowa.
The decision was also controversial because it means this year's playoff will have no teams from the Big Ten and the Pac-12. Instead, it will have two teams from the SEC, including one team that did not reach their conference championship game.
Listening to playoff committee chairman Kirby Hocutt, it sounds like the Buckeyes' loss to Iowa may have sealed their fate even before the conference championship games.
"We compared [Alabama's resume] to a 2-loss Ohio State team, obviously that one loss at home to No. 2-ranked Oklahoma," Hocutt said on ESPN. "But more damaging was the 31-point loss to unranked Iowa."
Conference championships are supposed to be a bit of a tiebreaker if the teams are considered otherwise equal. In this case, the committee did not view the teams as equals.

What I don’t think is fair is that Bama gained an advantage from not having to play a Conference Championship game, one less game to risk players getting hurt, and one more week of preparation over the other teams.
My Playoff Proposal fixes all that.
The Power Five Conference Champions plus one at-large to be determined by a play-in game between the best Power Five At-Large team and the best Non-Power Five conference team.
So Bama would have to play UCF to get into the tournament.
Alabama’s lose was to Auburn at Auburn.... no body wins at Auburn except Auburn. They could probably beat two number 1 teams two weeks in a row if they played at Auburn. But put them on a neutral field and they get their butts kicked.... ah la SEC championship game.
The BCS is banned ;-)))) They call it the Playoffs now.
Fight on, Trojans!
*** loss to Oklahoma doesnt mean that much,
It means Baker and crew went into their house and kicked their ass then planted a flag in it.***
Sorry hb, if I’m putting words in your mouth, but I think what you meant was that the game was played early on in the season, and if not followed by another loss, would have been forgivable with a conference championship win.
On the other hand, job, you sound like a sore winner.
Hard not to get healthy playing Teams like Mercer.
The bottom line is OSU’s loss to Oklahoma and Bama’s loss to Auburn are a wash. The difference is OSU’s loss to Iowa. Granted, OSU had better wins (although everyone forgets the Florida State team Bama beat in week 1, was not the FSU team that finished 6-6), but that one loss is the difference maker.
Not only did Bama not win the SEC but it didnt even win the Western Division. Reputation alone got it in. Unbelievable that both the Big 10 and PAC 12 were shut out. And I’m a huge Georgia fan.
Georgia will make sure Alabama doesnt have to get near Oklahoma.
Ummm, not true. We will be watching. It’s the last freakin’ game of the season. It doesn’t matter to me who the last two teams are.
The Bulldogs are only one of the three teams that I detest, and somehow I will manage.
Now, mind you, if FS who were playing in the final game, and they aren’t, I’d be watching the game on mute. I can’t stand their one and only fight song. You’d think that they could come up with a few more notes, but no, they aren’t musically inclined.
Yeah boy. They don't play the big time competition that OSU does -- like UNLV and Rutgers.
Georgia-OU should be a doozy.
Although I still think UGA made a mistake in not bringing Eason back, well it’s too late now.
You would be happy with that, and I agree it should be based on merit. However, the networks suits will not be happy with that and either the money will start drying up, or there will be an intervention and specific post-season qualification criteria will be instituted.
That’s why the TV ratings are poor.
No one outside the south cares for SEC football.
Sorry its just the truth.
Still think that Alabama threw the game with Auburn.
I think it was Mercer who was grateful for playing Alabama, it netted them $985,000 for their football program.
I think OSU's two losses effectively disqualifies them from the playoffs, period. I also think Georgia did everyone a huge favor by winning the SEC title game over Auburn ... because otherwise there would be an Auburn team with two losses in the playoffs right now.
Why? If OSU beats Wisky by more than 2 TDs, they probably would have gotten in over Bama. Bama getting in was not a foregone conclusion.
Not at all a mistake. He lost 5 games last year, they won the SEC and play in the Rose Bowl this year without him. We all feel he is gone when the season ends, to the West Coast or Miami.
I’m an Ohio State fan and I certainly did not want to see Clemson again. If anyone is ticked off its Clemson. You know they were not wanting Alabama. OSU vs. USC will be a great game. If OSU wins and ends up ranked fourth or fifth I can live with that.
