The White House has developed a plan to force out Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson, whose relationship with President Trump has been strained, and replace him with Mike Pompeo, the C.I.A. director, within the next several weeks, senior administration officials said on Thursday.
Mr. Pompeo would be replaced at the C.I.A. by Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas who has been a key ally of the president on national security matters, according to the White House plan. Mr. Cotton has signaled that he would accept the job if offered, said the officials, who insisted on anonymity to discuss sensitive deliberations before decisions are announced.
It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Trump has given final approval to the plan, but he has been said to have soured on Mr. Tillerson and in general is ready to make a change at the State Department.
John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, developed the transition plan and has discussed it with other officials. Under his plan, the shake-up of the national security team would happen around the end of the year or shortly afterward.

More NYT BS.
This sounds like some fake story that the Trump team would use as a test for leaks.
Fake news from the NYLies
“Mr. Trump”? Who is the NYT writing about, Eric or Don Jr.?
Within weeks? Say by the end of the year?
Bet Tillerson’s still there.
President Trump is first reference.
Correct second reference is “Mr. Trump.”
—AP Stylebook.
I like Tillerson and how he alienates and upsets career diplomats. I DESPISE career diplomats. I bet you many if not most of them are corrupt and on foreign payroll, either via cash or lavish lifestyles. We could but 80% of them and not miss them one bit. Tillerson wants to slash funding and staff. would DC veteran Pompeo do the same?
More NYT BS.
Yes. Exactly.
NYT trying to divert attention away from PROGRESSIVE SEX SCANDALS.
What nonsense. He serves at the pleasure of the President, who does not need a “plan” to “force” him out. He just needs to call him into the office and tell him he’s done.
First clue: "... senior administration officials said ..."
At this point, speculation and allegation only, but the “old gray lady” will still run with the story, in the hopes that somehow, this could happen, then how prescient would they have been?
There may be a few rough edges between Donald Trump and Rex Tillerson, but mostly, they are on the same page, and after all, Tillerson has to deal with the deepest of the Deep State in the Department of State. Considering the handicaps placed upon him, Tillerson is doing remarkably well.
AP Stylebook.
Maybe I'm being too sensitive in this case, but I've always used the term "the President" or some such for followup references, and also personal pronouns, if needed.
I see so much routine disrespect for the President in the Media that I'm automatically suspect of it.
I guess I disagree with the AP Stylebook, and would be interested to see a comparative analysis of the AP's print treatment of President Trump—or other Republican Presidents—versus President Obama.
I seriously doubt that the NYT gets any real information from White House sources.
Bogus!
Out of the swamp boat and into the swamp? Pampeo is the epitome of Swamp Creature. NWO connected.
