Most past presidents probably wouldn't say anything publicly about the bombshell firing Wednesday morning of NBC's Matt Lauer for "inappropriate sexual behavior." And, if they did say something, it would be along the lines of "Even the highest profile among us are not and should not be immune from being punished for these sorts of unacceptable behaviors."
Donald Trump, of course, is nothing like any past president -- a fact he proved again Wednesday morning with his tweet about Lauer's firing.
That Trump saw opportunity in the news of Lauer's dismissal to make a point about the so-called "Fake News" is not terribly surprising. It's the one consistent through line of his presidential politics.
It has served him well, politically speaking. His 2016 campaign was fueled by bullying and cruel jokes at the expense first of his Republican primary rivals and then Hillary Clinton. Trump's voters ate up his willingness to punch back against anyone at any time. He's saying the stuff I've been thinking! He won't back down from anyone!
Low road. Low road. Low road. Every damn time.
Why? That's a question only Trump can answer -- and it's not clear he would even know what to say. It's just who he is. He grew up learning that if someone tries to go low on you, the way to win is to go even lower -- and to make clear to them (and everyone else) that you are willing to go even lower still.
Trump views every event -- from white supremacist violence in Charlottesville to the firing of Lauer for inappropriate workplace behavior -- as an opportunity to score political points or prove himself right about something or other.
For him, taking the low road isn't an option. It's the only option.

Man...some people...Just. Dont. Get. It.
CNN- the news network that is on the lowest of low roads for fake news- accusing the president of being on the lowest of low roads- I think they call that projecting their own shortcomings onto others falsely-
Tell CNN Wal*Mart has a special this week
on ButtHurt Creme by the case. Or the truckload
if you’re CNN.
Sounds like the writer could be the next victim of the sex police.
No Chris, you and your group established that road years ago.
As an aficionado of cast iron cookware, I can see Trump’s tweets as infuriating petty & snide - yet exactly what’s needed to defeat the other truly petty & snide position.
Gonna be fun as he uses their own weapons against them - with their help because they opened that box...

Considering that Trump is surrounded by the enemy on all sides, I’d say that’s pretty darn good.
I am getting tired of WINNING!!
Cilizza was the guy that challenged Twitter to prove CNN had promulgated fake news, thus spawning a thread that went on for weeks (with dozens of examples).
They cropped Conyers out of the picture on the left.
Indeed
It makes talk about it regardless
I bet Joe and Mika are stewing
They have to look up to see the low road.
I ain’t no ways tired of winning.
I just love it when Trump acts unpresidential.
Me too........that’s one of the reasons I voted for him........LOL
Nice one!
But...but...the media LOVES the low road!
If interested, here’s one of several body language analysis of Lauer (this one’s his interview with Jeb Bush) which helps to point out why no one likes him.
