Most past presidents probably wouldn't say anything publicly about the bombshell firing Wednesday morning of NBC's Matt Lauer for "inappropriate sexual behavior." And, if they did say something, it would be along the lines of "Even the highest profile among us are not and should not be immune from being punished for these sorts of unacceptable behaviors."
Donald Trump, of course, is nothing like any past president -- a fact he proved again Wednesday morning with his tweet about Lauer's firing.
That Trump saw opportunity in the news of Lauer's dismissal to make a point about the so-called "Fake News" is not terribly surprising. It's the one consistent through line of his presidential politics.
It has served him well, politically speaking. His 2016 campaign was fueled by bullying and cruel jokes at the expense first of his Republican primary rivals and then Hillary Clinton. Trump's voters ate up his willingness to punch back against anyone at any time. He's saying the stuff I've been thinking! He won't back down from anyone!
Low road. Low road. Low road. Every damn time.
Why? That's a question only Trump can answer -- and it's not clear he would even know what to say. It's just who he is. He grew up learning that if someone tries to go low on you, the way to win is to go even lower -- and to make clear to them (and everyone else) that you are willing to go even lower still.
Trump views every event -- from white supremacist violence in Charlottesville to the firing of Lauer for inappropriate workplace behavior -- as an opportunity to score political points or prove himself right about something or other.
For him, taking the low road isn't an option. It's the only option.

Fake news. Fake news. Fake news. Every damn time.
YUUUUGGGGE WIN!!!!!
Pot, kettle.
And while those two are arguing, you don’t notice what’s cookin’ on the back burners.
Put some ice on it.
Liberals live on the low road. Trying destroy Trump daily for 2.5 years. Let me got get some tissues because I’m weeping for Matt. Not!
Can’t keep up, eh, creep? You and the rest of the Democrat media can only whine that the President is being mean. Disgusting creatures.
Love Trump...
The way I see it, Matt Lauer is the one that took the low road. It happens everyday in the liberal media. There is no honor among liberal journalists.
CNN? Criticizing over “Low Road” tactics?
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
You take the high road and I’ll take the low road, and I’ll be in Dublin a’fore ye...
That's like leaving Anthony Weiner to marry Harvey Weinstein.
It seems like CNN thinks it is appropriate for it to determine and specify what they feel is “the right thing for POTUS to say about anything”.
Too bad for them, that they don’t.
Good for us that he doesn’t care if they provide “positive” coverage of him. Even if he HAD said what they thought he should have said, they would no doubt have turned it against him somehow.
MAGA!!
I just love it when Trump acts “unpresidential”.
CNN...ESAD!
Hypocritical, “holier-than-thou” libs have finally
met a street fighter as good at it, and as nasty as they
are.
Listen to ‘em squeal... Sheer music...
....on the bonnie, bonnie banks
of Loch Lomond..
CNN yearns for the return of the usual GOP-e punching bags.
Chris must be next up....in the sexual harassment circus...
