Can the descent of American political culture into ugly tribalism be halted? Alabama voters will give their answer when they decide whether to send Roy Moore to the U.S. Senate.
Moore, 70, has built a long, disgraceful career out of smarmy religiosity spiked with tribal grievance. Having posed for years as the most pious of Christians, he now stands accused by nine women of un-Christian behavior: They claim convincingly that Moore, when he was in his 30s, aggressively pursued romantic or sexual relationships, including with teens barely half his age.
Successful demagogues can use tribal enmities to blind their followers to such moral and logical contradictions.
Moore uses his angry Christianity as a tool of self-aggrandizement. He uses the trust and passion of the Alabamians he defrauds to sully the reputations of women who bravely testify to his allegedly vile and creepy behavior.
Alabama’s three major newspapers ran rare front-page editorials Sunday imploring voters not to send this unworthy man to Washington. It is a sad sign of the times that I am not sure whether that hurt Moore’s prospects or helped them. The “mainstream media” is an enemy whose disapproval Moore cultivates to make his supporters love him more.
Moore is not invincible. He can be defeated — but only if Alabamians decide that honor, integrity and morality are more important than tribe.

How many articles has this clown written about the tribal aspects of the Black Congressional Caucus? Can’t get much more tribal than the CBC. If the race was between Roy Moore and Bill Clinton, I would bet the ranch that this idiot would vote for Bill. The end always justifies means with his ilk.

I agree. I think Moore is innocent. But let’s pretend he is not. Let’s pretend he DID do something wrong 40 years ago - and hasn’t repeated any of it for 30+ years.
Would the wrong doing done 30+ years ago mean a person should vote for a pro-abortion, big government hater of religious belief?
Don’t see it. Even if Moore is guilty, and I don’t think he is.
In Alabama, nothing is more important than who wins today’s Iron Bowl.

Morality matters in day-to-day life and in the big picture. If liberals win, freedom dies, the United States dies, and humanity dies. If Judge Moore really is guilty, and I have serious doubts on that, he’s a man who did tacky things 40 years ago with no scandal since then. If democrats win, they will do evil things today and for the rest of time, as they have as recently as every one of the past eight years.
In WW2, we sided with the evil soviet socialists to stop the evil national socialists. That was the moral option. Today we can easily side with the possibly once tacky Judge to stop the bigots, tyrants, baby killers, and other known liars who probably invented the charges against Judge Moore. Morality is the ultimate arbiter of right, and (as with most questions) in this case it is not on the side of democrats.
It takes three generations to get the dirt of the homeland out from under the fingernails.
Obama gave us so many immigrants that we are approaching a tipping point.... by the tribalists!

The moral code for Progressives comes from the same source as that of Muslims. Both ideologies were formed in a time and place where the power of Christ was evident, but that offended the founders of each because it did not place man on the pedestal for determining his own fate. They both seek to elevate Natural Man (which Christianity identifies as degenerate and at war with God) so that their works will earn the debt of a diety. Islam elevated the Arabic moon god to that place and Progressivism elevates the state to that place.
So, with actual morals off the table, morality becomes whatever advances the ideology most.
For this guy to decry tribalism is a laugh.
Conservatives want PROOF of wrongdoing, not 40 year old unproven claims. And evidence of criminality. And, perhaps, if the action is immoral but not illegal, some notion that the individual is impenitent.
The opposite is true of liberals.
