Denzel Washington says upbringing and a lack of father figures are to blame for many young men ending up in jail.
The Oscar winner, 62, was speaking at the premiere of his latest film, Roman J. Israel, Esq., in which he stars as an idealistic defense attorney whose life is upended when his partner, the firm's front man, dies.
Asked if the film made him feel more cynical about the justice system, the star replied: 'It starts at home.'

I think the later number is way lower than reality.
I appreciate these comments.
If folks were to listen to him, it would help Black kids far more than Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton ever have.
Its an obvious truth and its sad so few besides Denzel have the courage to challenge the social justice warriors by dealing with facts.
He plays a very liberal defense attorney in the movie, which some will find off-putting. But he plays the character very well and delivers a superb performance.
He carries the movie on his own.
He's a dedicated Marxist globalist shill determined to help destroy the USA to ashes.
OMG!!! Denzel is taking TRUTH!! He will be STONED in Hollywood for this!
My national church should listen to such as Denzel Washington rather than its spiratual masters.
He had 8 years to do that and all he did was kick the beehive
+1
He made another sensible comment recently so I made it a point to watch the Book of Eli. I think we’ll watch John Q tomorrow.
Fine gesture, to speak truth and reason. It’s always easier to cast blame onto a nebulous demon and the stock and trade of the Obama’s, Jackson’s, and Sharpton’s. Too bad the majority of the target audience buys the latter.
Your statement sounds like the soft bigotry of low expectations. Yes, the left did deliberately try to destroy the Black family but in the end, they did it to themselves. The blame lies with them and the solution is within their power to implement.

I know the figures a few years back were black 70%+, Hispanic around 50% and white around 20%. Asian the lowest as I recall.
I agree, ‘it takes a village’ has been widely used to justify the absence of fathers, mothers, and family in rearing a child. Without a married father and mother, the child has no family to guide them and teach them the basic facts, responsibilities, purposes of life that only a parent of each gender can provide. God defined the family and it’s relationship to each other and to Him.
Men aren’t men and women aren’t women anymore. No wonder children fall prey to the deception that government will and must provide all their needs. They are taught that under such a government they have no roles and responsibilities except to reap the benefits they have been promised them for voting a certain way. Our society has broken down because God and the family unit has been tossed aside.

Everything except this makes sense.
The teenage years are crucial to making a young man respect women.
A father must be there to ensure that his son treats his mother and sisters with respect. At home is where a boy learns how a man treats women.
If the teenage boy is permitted to treat his mother or sisters harshly and with disrespect the father must come down hard on the young man so that he knows the man he respects most will not tolerate disrespect of women.
A teenage boy left to the influence of his peers will learn that women are inferior and can be treated as such.
An adolescent boy needs a father to teach him to be a gentleman.
I’ll read your article with interest.
I’d take issue with a claim of soft bigotry of low expectations, however. That would mean continuing to favor the status quo with the presumption they’ll never change. I’ve discussed the subject for years and it’s a complex set of reasons why things have reached this point. But a large part of it WAS by design to make them political pawns of the left (LBJ himself was as blunt as could be when he intended to have them voting Democrat for the next 200 years). Too many people have a vested interest in keeping them in present conditions, including scores of their own elected officials (who make out quite well for themselves to the detriment of their constituents).
The teen years can be troublesome. However, we have ONLY observed that when fathering was inadequate the first 6-8 years of life.
Sometimes quality parenting can make some headway with playing 'catch-up' during the teen years. But it's a challenging task.
0-18 are the crucial years for both young boys and girls and proper parenting by a mother and father.
Denzel is truly a treasure.
