I was on USS Independence CV-62 South of Iran in the Arabian Sea 1980. Waited 2 1/2 hour in line to get a PATHETIC "Thanksgiving""Meal". Was thankful anyway.

A very nice family in Elgin, IL had me over for Thanksgiving in 1968 when I was in Boot Camp. Interestingly enough, I was on Independence in the Fall of 1973 as a Submarine Liaison Officer to CTF 69.

First Thanksgiving I was in BASIC. First Christmas I got to go home because I had just finished AIT and was headed for Germany afterward.

Fort Benning, GA. Just two weeks in and the first and only time I actually felt ‘homesick’. Got over it quick when I pulled KP.

I entered navy boot camp right after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28th, 1976; first Christmas was spent at NTC/RTC San Diego; first Thanksgiving was on board W.H. Standley, CG-32, then in the yards at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington...buddy of mine and I rented a small house on the water, address was 610 Washington Beach. Ah, the days!

Thanksgiving at Lackland AFB 1971, end of basic was one week away. The dinner was good but still institutional. It was the first (not the last) time I had nuts and christmas candy from #10 cans.
The real thrill was seeing people, not all dressed in green at the chapel. I incidentally saw my senior MTIs family. Boy did he have a gracious and good looking wife with a most wonderful smile.
