Where were you on your first Thanksgiving and Christmas in the Military?
Ft Bliss 1966 and then later in the jungle north west of Saigon in 1967 were Thanksgiving meals for me in the military
I was in “A school.” I cooked a turkey and invited a couple of friends over. 1980.
For Christmas, I went home, about 100 miles away.
The next Christmas I was in Tay Nihn, RVN.
I was at Lackland AFB in 1981 for Thanksgiving while attending the Defense Language Institute English Language course prior to heading to Monterey, CA for Basic Chinese. Christmas was at my parents house in Redondo Beach in while enroute to Monterey. Happy Thanksgiving!

A very nice family in Elgin, IL had me over for Thanksgiving in 1968 when I was in Boot Camp. Interestingly enough, I was on Independence in the Fall of 1973 as a Submarine Liaison Officer to CTF 69.
I was at NTC Great Lakes MM A school. 1982. It was pretty good for a cafeteria style meal.
First Thanksgiving I was in BASIC. First Christmas I got to go home because I had just finished AIT and was headed for Germany afterward.
Fort Benning, GA. Just two weeks in and the first and only time I actually felt ‘homesick’. Got over it quick when I pulled KP.
Wait... must’ve been in AIT for both. AIT was at least six weeks. Been a long time.
On duty as an MP in Bad Hersfeld, Germany 1983.
