Xi Jinping breaks taboo and enters the Forbidden City
Chinese leader may still be commander-in-chief in 2035, when he would be 82

TOKYO -- Mao Zedong, the founding father of modern China, never once set foot inside the walls of Beijing's Forbidden City. While he did sometimes stand on the rostrum of Tiananmen -- the southernmost gate of the sprawling 72-hectare complex -- including on Oct. 1, 1949, when he declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China, he intentionally avoided entering the former home of emperors.
Perhaps it was due to his belief that as the head of the Chinese Communist Party, a party that clenched power by opposing the feudal system of government, he should not be seen admiring the imperial sites. Since then, it has been somewhat of a taboo for China's top leader to walk inside the palace, although the leaders' office, Zhongnanhai, lies next door.
Earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping shattered that tradition.
When U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, arrived in Beijing on Nov. 8, they were whisked to the Forbidden City. There, inside the walls of the former imperial palace, stood Xi with his wife, Peng Liyuan, beside him.
Xi had closed down the UNESCO World Heritage site for the day. And in an unprecedentedly lavish welcome, Xi himself took the American president and first lady on a tour of the vast compound. State-run China Central Television trumpeted the red-carpet treatment, carrying Trump's tour of the Forbidden City live and uninterrupted.

P!
He’s a rebel. What else can one say.
He’s a psycho fascist.
Wow.
This is really one for the history books. Theirs and ours.
As long as they’re not Common Core.
Sheesh.
(Does anyone remember the Nixon trip to PRC? Not quite the same...)
MAGA!
So he’s the new emperor.
It’s quite impressive. It is suitable for our leaders (both of them, America’s and China’s) to be admiring such true excellence.
Glad Trump got to see it. Glad he is in charge. Very glad.
P!
Yellow being the color of imperial royalty in China, this sends a message.

Wasn’t it Obama’s trip there where they didn’t even drive up a stairway to the AF1 door, so he had to exit down a rear stairway? ...What a difference in showing of respect by Xi.
Mao was presumably superstitious, which may have been the reason he wouldn’t go there.
Yes what a difference. But that respect was earned by our President from prior meetings here between the two where our President treated Xi with respect due his office. I am sure Obama would not have treated him as such and would have went off on one of his IIIIIMEMEMEME tirades. Respect is earned and President Trump is earning it BACK after 8 long years of Obama.
But our 547(?) other elected officials in the FERAL Government refuse to listen and we need to cast off our chains of oppression that these are placing around us. Elections will not fix them and they need to be removed from their nest. President Trump knows they are the weak link
This just reaffirms my belief that it was just as much if not more about sending a message about his consolidated power as it was receiving Trump with a positive show.
You realize that photo is fake. Check out the noise maker in his hand.
Maybe it was Xi’s best choice to try to impress Trump. Trump owns impressive properties around the world.
Barak didn’t even get met at the airport and stayed in a Motel 6 while Trump gets all the fanfare and eats at the Forbidden City.
