The UCLA basketball team is heading home to Los Angeles from China without star freshman LiAngelo Ball, who is accused of shoplifting and is being detained. And it may be a while before Ball rejoins them, as new evidence in his case has surfaced.
ESPN is reporting that there is surveillance footage of Ball and fellow UCLA freshmen players Jalen Hill and Cody Riley shoplifting from three stores inside a retail center near the team hotel in Hangzhou, China. The players have spoken with police and are currently confined to their hotel while the investigation continues.
Chinas justice system moves slowly, but its conviction rates are high (as in 99 percent for shoplifting offenses) and the penalties are often stiff. In this case, the players could face up to 10 years in prison.
However, ESPN claims that the situation will likely take a week or two to be resolved. Ball is part of the fabled basketball family that includes father LaVar (whose Ball in the Family reality show airs on Facebook and who is regularly parodied by Kenan Thompson on Saturday Night Live); Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball; and high school basketball sensation LaMelo Ball, who is already committed to UCLA.

When do they start complaining about White Chinese privilege?
I guess China doesn’t accept black privilege. Where’s Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton?
The Ball is in China’s Court.....................
No worries and no offense taken. No snark is bad snark, especially as it relates to these creeps.
So in the meantime, who is paying the hotel bill? That can’t be cheap.
It takes time to get money from offshored numbered accounts and then transferred to front accounts so that taxes don't have to be paid.
Imagine the fun with these names over there.
RiAngero Barr
Nobody gonna recognize him when they get through with him.
BINGO!
You have won today's internet.
They wouldn't dare take a knee when the International is played.
Not sure what is more ridiculous - the NCAA has teams opening their season in China or these privileged thugs to think they can away with shop lifting in a Communist country. Not that I care too much but I wonder if the school bothered to brief the team before the trip on Chinese laws and their justice system.
This clown has apparently never seen the show Locked Up Abroad on NatGeo. Prison in a foreign country is someplace you do NOT want to be.

No mention of the daughters in the WNBA - Lashonda LaMeequa, LaQuanda or LaDindu?
I would assume if one was shoplifting one would not want to be conspicuous. These three guys were probably the tallest people in the Chinese district.

That would be racist. To assume some teens would shoplift?
Uh-uh uh. Cant even THINK that.
The guys should be able to speak fluent Chinese by the time they get back.
Wait until one of these guys tries to back talk a 5’4” guard.
I would have guessed Methodists or Amish with their names.
These guys could be in some serious trouble if the Chinese authorities have them shoplifting on video tape.
They won't be kneeling anytime soon during the national anthem to protest how bad it is for blacks in America, after they spend a few years in the Chinese pokey.
If they get off on this shoplifting incident and get to come back home, I would be getting down on my knees when I landed in the States, to thank God that I was lucky enough to live in America.
They’ll only do it once.
“Did you know CA decriminalized shoplifting last year.”
Seriously? Misdemeanor? Or just let them go without charging at all?
Most stores no longer prosecute as it costs too much.
“Every team member should be required to read John Woodens A game plan for life. Assuming, of course, they can read.”
A 2 semester course? Come on make it a 2 year course at least to fulfill to stringent academic requirements of the scholarship.
