When Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte sits down for his first face-to-face bilateral meeting with President Trump on Monday in Manila, he will come to the table with an unusual request.
Duterte wants the United States to return war trophies seized more than 100 years ago: three historic church bells that were taken from the Philippine village of Balangiga after a bloody clash during the Philippine-American War.
In 1899, fighting broke out between U.S. troops and Filipino nationalists after Spain ceded control of the Philippines to the U.S. following Spain's defeat in the Spanish-American War. The nationalists seized control of the main island in the Philippines and declared a republic, vowing not to succumb to American imperial rule. More than 200,000 Filipino civilians and 4,800 American troops died in the ensuing conflict, which formally ended in 1902 as the U.S. suppressed the uprising.

They were like the "Kick the Yanks out of Vieques Island" crowd in Puerto Rico. The people who worked there yelled bloody murder about losing good-paying jobs and there were some pols who felt the same way about the loss of taxes, yet the vocal Communists were able to stampede their agenda through under the guise of Nationalism.
No, Duterte was bad-mouthing Obama. As soon as he heard that Trump got elected, he said that he hoped he could work with the next president.
Thanks, Texas Booster. Alas, I didn’t mention the bells, maybe I should if Trump returns them. Anyway, here is a link to the episode you’re talking about:

Maybe we return one now and keep one, to remember the Americans who were ruthlessly shot in cold blood that day.
Their lives deserve remembrance as well.
Baloney! We don’t owe the Philippines a nickel. They owe us.
We took the Philippines back from the Japs and freed the people. They have their country back because of the U.S.A. We built a naval base and then they kicked us out but kept the improvements for themselves. Then they asked us back when they got into trouble. A lot of US soldiers, sailors and airmen were killed in the Philippines. I repeat, we owe them nothing!
WE freed the Philippines from the Spanish and then told them they weren’t free, they were our colony ad we killed a few thousand of them to prove the point. We OWE then their property back and giving back three fu-—ng bells costs us nothing. You have an imperialistic mindset in a world where countries don’t want you controlling what they do and there is no legitimate reason for us to hold onto 3 bells. .
LOL so they should give us bells? you re ridiculous.
We freed the Philippines from the Japanese at great cost in lives and material. We owe them NOTHING. As far as my “imperialistic mindset” is concerned, I am fed up with suckers like you who think the USA is always to blame. Cry me a river!
I think we should keep everything we stole from these pipsqueak countries. The US is to blame for colonizing the Philippines in 1898. I’m fed up with idiots like you who don’t know squat about history.
I agree. Good to have those facts, thanks.
I will wager a good sum that my knowledge of history surpasses yours. In 1898 most of the world was colonized by England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Holland, France, etc. The US is to blame for nothing outside of the general activities of strong nations at the time.
If you don’t like our country and her history, you are most welcome to LEAVE!
WTFDOTYA? If you don’t want to give the bells back you can leave.
Cal Poly Pomona History Major 1964. Married to Filipinos and studied the history of the Philippines and the war.
Your NEED to hold on to those bells is psychopathic. and illustrative of the worst ind of oppression on one country over another. Find another way to get your self off.
GTH! “Married to Philipinos” says it all! I am sick and tired to America always being blamed. You love them so much, go live there............or maybe you do. Instead of worrying about bells, they should be cleaning up their cities and government.
America is being “blamed” for not returning the bells. You are the one turning it into world war III. I see, if I love a Fillipina who is a US citizen you want me to live in the Philippines. You continue to exhibit symptoms of character disorders.
