Days after Republicans suffered electoral defeats up and down the ballot in Virginia, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced he will not seek reelection next year.
After much contemplation and prayer, the 13-term congressman said in a statement that he and his wife decided the time was right for him to step aside.
With my time as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee ending in December 2018, he said, this is a natural stepping-off point and an opportunity to begin a new chapter of my career and spend more time with my family, particularly my granddaughters.
Term limits bar him from serving another term as chairman of the influential committee; he was previously chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.
Goodlatte, the most senior Republican in the Virginia congressional delegation, is known as a serious student of policy in Washington who keeps a close watch over state and local GOP politics.
He made news earlier this year when his plan to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics prompted public outcry and critical tweets from Trump

So he could go back to insider trading as legal for members of Congress?
Keep draining the swamp . . .
26 years is about 22 years too long.
Good riddance to another Swamp Thing.
BS...New Jersey and Virginia are only slightly to the right of the NORKS.
Don’t let the door hit ‘ya where the Good Lord split ‘ya!
/shrug
Not like he or the House Judiciary Committee ever did a single thing.
The best thing here is for the GOPe to nominate 36 potential candidates for the position to ensure a swift defeat.
My question is who will replace him and is his district solid Republican?
Trump needs to have a plan to make as certain as he can that these people leaving can be successfully replaced with people who will support the Trump agenda. Steve Bannon needs to be supported in his efforts at crafting a GOP that will work WITH the president.
For all the GOP’s flaws, it’s good to see them holding to their promise to limit committee leadership positions to six years. That’s what’s driving a number of these retirements on the GOP side of the aisle next year. Once they’re no longer chairing a committee they don’t want to go back to being just regular House members.
The GOP Swamp Rats are dropping like flies.
Wonder if it has something to do with 81 sealed Mulehead indictments?
They all need to be term limited. Term limits at every level.
How much prayer did it take to realize he probably wouldn't have survived the primary fight?
So, will Pelosi still have enough Brain Cells to become Speaker of the House again, or will that Honor go to Maxine Waters?
Not sure. Pelosi opposes impeachment.
The new GOPe (Goofy OLD Pansy eccentrics) party is going into the dustbin as it well should. Only not fast enough. The changes and delays in what needs to be done for this country havent moved fast enough either. Meanwhile the wasted opportunities along the way have cost them NOTHING! Healthcare, secure borders, tax reform . . . nothing. They would rather fold the tent and go home . . . the problem I have with that is they want sit on their collective do nothing butts until their terms are up (rather than leave now) and perpetuate the filibuster against achievement in the meantime. Parasites looking out for themselves!
Somebody realized that he did not want to fight that hard and possibly lose in 2018 to some no-name democrat after all of the Virginia losses on Tuesday. It might be a problem to hold that seat, but I bet a couple of the local state Delegates are thinking about running for it.
Reckon these clowns want to bow out before they are thrown out, ‘cause their price per head as lobbyists/shills would be greatly diminished, right?
Did his district go for Trump or Clinton?
