Churches around the country are rattled after the horrendous attack today in Texas understandably so. I went to our church's evening service tonight a Baptist church in a small town, not unlike Sutherland. We arrived late due to inclement weather in the area and found the doors locked from the inside. One of the deacons, acting out of an abundance of caution, had locked the doors and was "on patrol" in the lobby. There were conversations afterward about how churches can/should prepare for an active shooter situation. I know several men (and probably a few women) in our congregation carry when they're in church, but today's attack was a complete ambush. Most, if not all of the congregants would have been focused on the sermon or the music at the front of the sanctuary. An attacker could get off hundreds of rounds before anyone realized what was going on. There's no way a church can fully prepare for such a situation, and most wouldn't want to employ armed guards or force attendees to go through metal detectors.
That said, many churches are actively taking steps to protect church members:

I do remember reading of killings in churches where someone with a gun would have prevented it. One in particular was where a guy killed eight members of a choir practicing. It too was a Baptist church in TX.
NATURE:
NATURE:
NATURE:
It is an offense to nature that man refuses to defend himself.
Our church uses an off duty cop - I’d wager mine isn’t the only concealed weapon in the nave....
Please. Two different issues.
Being a depressive, I personally wouldn’t own a gun, but thank goodness for all of you who do. I sit in the front at my church. Before each mass, I touch the hymnals and reconfirm that if somebody rushes the altar in order to hurt or kill our priest, I will grab the hymnal, holler and rush the altar.
I may not live, but hopefully, I’ll get the attention of the armed female Minneapolis police officer who attends the early mass.
I also took hatchet throwing lessons, so I am confident that I will hit the (muslim, in my mind) in the head with the book.
There was a time when church goers were required to bring their “firelocks” to church, and drill after services.
In ancient England, church goers were required to bring their longbows and arrows for the same reason.
Then the Fainthearts took over and banned it.
Even the ancient Temple at Jerusalem had an armory and guards. Why should churches today not have something equivalent?
Of course, it will give the naysayers an excuse to criticize churches for being “like mosques”.
Mass shooters look for "soft-targets" and (for the most part) will run when confronted. Knowing that they might be walking into an armed and prepared camp will make them think twice and look for "softer" targets in the future...
Gods armor is just fine, it just works better against satanic influences and powers, not against man.
Yesterday in South Texas an evil God-hating man made war on unarmed Christians; men, women, and children.
Yesterday in South Texas an armed Christian, Stephen Willeford, made war back, and prevailed.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
And in the end, the only real means of protecting innocent life, and preserving liberty, is an armed, prepared, willing citizenry.
My husband and I follow the same principle. I WILL protect my family and I am not going to grovel and ask permission to do it.
Same in ours. It’s an open secret. In fact, the CCW carriers follow a regular schedule for constant coverage, like our ushers or deacons.
Then the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego must be myth.
Daniel 3:16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[c] from Your Majestys hand.
Either way they weren't bowing down and worshipping Nebuchadnezzar's idol. God doesn't promise us peace on earth. He also possesses us with skills and discernment to take positive actions for the avoidance of these outcomes.
God helps those that help themselves.
