WASHINGTONTexas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz warned Tuesday that the United States would face massive economic costs if President Donald Trump killed the North American Free Trade Agreement but that Trump might go ahead and make that decision.
Cruz said NAFTA has created millions of jobs across the United States, and he said Texans believe in international trade. He expressed concern that Trump, whom he generally supports, would seek to use the ongoing NAFTA renegotiation to reduce trade and erect protectionist barriers rather than to expand trade.
Reducing access to the Canadian and Mexican markets, Cruz said, would do profound damage to the American economy and to Texas in particular.
Which direction will the administration go? I will tell you candidly: I dont know, Cruz said at the pro-NAFTA U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. His comments highlight the uncertainty surrounding Donald Trumps intentions.

Ill have to dig up the article about this Mexico misnomer about the reason they left is because of employee costs when exactly the opposite was true.
The article reflected that the employee cost per car to a company manufacturing in Mexico was a 4-500$ save per car. The executive went on to say that financially if moving your operations to Mexico based on that measure alone it wasnt fiscally feasible to do this and the company would not move.
HOWEVER the 50+ unilateral trade agreements with other nations for material to manufacture was saving car manufacturers 2-3000$ per car. That means the Mexican Government has adopted free trade within their platform so that the free flow of tarrif free goods under agreements with these countries goes unabetted.
We used to have a nation like that until Government got in the way
Good, now scoot.
Ted is the embodiment of Orthodox Conservatism.
And Orthodox Conservatism, while usually meaning well, has lost its way. As have its followers.
Conservatism without Nationalism is like Faith Without Works.
Of little value to the world, or its adherents.
The U.S. is an independent country and we will return to trading as an independent country.
The U.S. is an independent country and we will return to trading as an independent country.
Why do tariffs work? You think the govt. is gonna pass the revenue on to you? Tariffs limit our ability to export things we produce.
Immediate problem with this argument is that they have, in fact, moved to Mexico. Even during the election, I think it was FORD or some other company that--after Trump highlighted their move--quietly reversed the decision. Same is true for Oreos and many other companies.
No, you’re not going to get that on these kind of thread which are dominated by people who confuse global totalitarian government with international free trade. They just can’t or won’t get there heads around it.
So they reject free international trade out of hand period. Fugeddabouddit.
Id also be 100% ok with tarrifs if
1) that money did not go to the federal Government (something folks fail to remember because Uncle Sam always needs more) and
2) elimination of the Federal income tax because if the Government is raising its capital through tarrifs (what was done pre income tax) then they dont need to be in my pockets
I agree there is a happy medium within all of this
Texans believe in international trade.
Idiot. It is not trade that we don’t like, it is trade deals that are dismantling our economy.
“Who has paid for ted now?”
He was speaking before the US Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber of Commerce owns the Republican Party...lock, stock and barrel.
The sad fact is these trade agreements have little to do with free trade. Lately they have been used to usurp the constitution via treaty.
We have been opening our borders to “free” trade and immigration while our “partners” have been protecting their industries. Why would we ever enter into an agreement where the two junior partners - Canada and Mexico - can screw us over and when we complain they over rule us by a 2-1 vote?
Get it out of your mind that these partners are bein fair. They are using the naïveté of people like you to screw us over.
From my studies of Republcan Party history I would say the orthodox position on trade would be staunch protectionism. The global push for de industrialization of the USA through offshoring and global labor arbitrage started in earnest in the 1980's. So given that I would call the NWO global free traders neocons. Would you agree?
Cruz is for Mexico.
Trump is for America.
This is why Trump is President Trump.
Tariffs are on imports imports dolt. They can export to whomever.
Deficits are not always bad
You are an idiot.
So in a battle of wills you would fold when you are backed by the largest economy in the world? Don’t be a cuck...
