Washington (CNN) A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter. The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge.
Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
It is unclear what the charges are. A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.
Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.
The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation.
CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia. Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. His team has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to a handful of figures...

Trump should fire Sessions and Mueller today. The reason is simple. Session acts like a scared rat and is totally useless as an AG. Trump should fire his ass and appoint Guliani as AG. He needs to let everyone in Washington know who the president is. No one seems to know.
You seem to have very little faith that Trump knows what he’s doing.
Depends.
One needs less evidence for an indictment than for a conviction: hence the famous saying about the ham sandwich.
But if it turns out (say) that Boente's eyewitness testimony or docs, are needed for a *conviction*, then I could see his stepping down immediately before the arrest: because once you are arrested, IIRC, by the Brady rules, you are entitled to see the evidence against you.
Interesting. Thanks!
Why should it take any longer to build a case against Comey than against Manafort or Flynn? It might even be easier -- Comey may have perjured himself in Congress a couple months back. Plus they have him for illegal removal of government documents -- his Trump meeting "notes" -- which were subsequently leaked to the media.
Seems a perjury and government removal case against Comey would be much easier than some financial case against Manafort that would require tons of financial forensics to piece together.
“These people are sleaze balls.”
Mueller’s special counsel, sanctioned by Sessions’ DAG, Rosenstein, is a conspiracy to overthrow a lawfully elected President of the United States under the auspices of the Department of Justice and color of ‘law’. As though the DOJ is an extra-constitutional check on the POTUS, it’s not.
This is and always has been an overt COUP by the corrupt state cheered on by the corrupt media.
Anyone here thinking Sessions is playing 3d chess or Mueller & Rosenstein are somehow working for Trump are huffing whippet canisters and smoking banana peels.
Yep... and if congress refuses to confirm Guliani... he should just tell them that he will act as temporary AG until they get around to confirming a nominee.
The momentum is all with Trump and the Reps. Mueller must stop it by changing the subject. An indictment of Manafort will dominate the news cycle for days if not weeks.

It may be a tactic for Mueller to lock up the investigation (S) into his domain.
Bring charges and insist that any potential Witnesses in any other investigations by Congress are put in a position that they Cant say anything because of the Ongoing Criminal trial.
The more I think about it, Im sure that this is what Mueller is doing.

Larry is Freeper LS. He’s been on target for a long time, so if he thinks Name Redacted is worth reading, I read.
There are plenty of dirty actors who were in collusion with Russia, for either the dossier stuff or uranium, maybe other stuff too. So this should be VERY interesting.
Actually I think Trump has settled in really well. I think he and Bannon are about to get the repub senate lined out. I think he has really gotten his footing in the past couple of months. I just can’t believe that Muller is going after anybody on the left side of the isle.
Yeah that is why Im not sure to trust this Larry person, or the Name Redacted person..its NO ONE associated with Trump, not the Trump kids, not Manafort, not Flynn(For sure its not Flynn since the Grand Jury came from DC) so who is it..Comey..no way highly and I mean HIGHLY doubt it..so who?
He's our Freeper "LS".
Plus when Comey was fired, he was in LA, and so Trump’s administration people got every single thing in Comey’s office.
Oh OK, thanks for the info..so I wonder who it is..because that Name Redacted person seems pretty convincing..says its NOT the Trump kids, NOT Kuschner, NOT Manafort, NOT Flynn, not ANYONE associated with Trump or his campaign..so who
LOL. It will be a long, long time before another AG is confirmed.
I think there is almost zero chance it is Comey... but it is true that indicting Comey would make a lot of people on both sides of the isle very happy.
Hmmmm:
