Washington (CNN) A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter. The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge.
Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
It is unclear what the charges are. A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.
Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.
The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation.
CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia. Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. His team has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to a handful of figures...

Comey did have on his running shoes earlier this week.
There's a whole bunch of folks like you on this thread who do. I think there's something to be said about so many people agreeing on a point that seems so simple that the likelihood of it being true is high.
Wait until Manafort flips on the Hillary campaign and his Democrat "handlers" on this one ... that's when the sparks are really going to fly!
Can't wait for Trump to fire Mueller and McCabe!!
Yeah, Manafort. Probably the only person in the whole thing who DIDNT commit a crime. Perfect.
Yeah but not sure that means anything yet, they might not be notified until Sunday.... unusual for the weekend timing perhaps, but Mueller & co. might not give a target/attorney more than 1 day’s notice of a pending arrest/indictment.
If boente resigned because he is a witness then it would likely be obstruction charge...which means other players are in play on this one
John McCain works.
yes the NY POST is reporting it but also based off the CNN story
They desperately need to get Hillary and the DNC off the front page.
Says the #FakeNews network...
If Manafort is charged then the Podesta Bros shouldn’t be far behind...
That was my point earlier
That might put a Congressional subpoena on hold, but it wouldnt stop the witness from running his mouth on national television.
Your’e assuming that they want to talk to the media.
The people that we NEED to hear from are complicit, why would they run to the media?
We really haven’t heard from any true Patriots, any whistle blowers, during this entire saga.
Mandafort is dirty.
Was Tony's Podesta's house raided? Of course not. He's swamp royalty. Mueller won't touch him. It will be Monafort.
They're merely reporting that CNN is reporting it. That's how they all work... one of them (CNN, WaPo, etc.) reports something and the others all report "CNN is reporting that...". That way it's all over the place, but the source is still the single (questionable) source... this time it's CNN's turn.
Sorry old news I have asked it be removed
