Wait, 90% of 43% means that fewer then 4 out of 10 Catalans have declared the desire to be independent of Spain. That’s a terrible basis on which to found a country. I don’t think they’ve thought this through.

Only one-third of American colonists were in favor of independence from England.

That point keeps getting lost, this whole thing was done outside the normal election system. There is no Catalan mandate for independence. Instead, this is a prescription for violence and civil war.

“That’s a terrible basis on which to found a country. I don’t think they’ve thought this through.”

We did it with far less participation.

Well it worked out for us.

“Historian Robert Calhoon said the consensus of historians is that between 40 and 45 percent of the white population in the Thirteen Colonies supported the Patriots’ cause, between 15 and 20% supported the Loyalists, and the remainder were neutral or kept a low profile.”

Only 30% of our Nation supported independence from Britain yet we seem to have pulled it off...

In truth the American revolution was pretty close to the same numbers.

Fortune favors the brave.

The USA became independent of Great Britain with as little as 15% support according to some historians. If Catalan independence has 40% active support while the rest are content to sit at home and watch the revolution on TV then the 40% are the only people who matter.

What proportion of Americans was in favor of the Revolution when it was started?

Fewer than 4 out of 10 Americans wanted independence from Britain.

This is like Democrats arguing the GOP's big victory in the 2014 midterm didn't count, because of its record low 36.4% turnout.

If you don't vote, your opinion is irrelevant.
