Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona on Tuesday issued an unprecedented indictment of the behavior and practices of the president of the United States, who also happens to be the leader of Flakes own party. Flake declared that none of these appalling features of our current politics should ever be regarded as normal.
This has been a common refrain since November 2016 the sentiment that what we are living through is not normal but is instead an aberration, an unwarranted usurpation of a consensus about what American public life is supposed to be like.
In essence, we are being told that if we refuse to accept that this is the new normal, as Flake and others urge us to do, Trumpism will eventually be expelled from the body politic the way a piece of gristle is expelled from the esophagus by the Heimlich maneuver. The pathway to regular breathing will reopen, and we will thereby restore the true new normal.
For many of us, this is comforting. But it is a delusion.
Donald Trump is, in fact, the new normal. Indeed, by deciding not to seek re-election, Flake himself is acknowledging the fact while rhetorically fighting it.
Democrats and liberals will surely protest that Flakes problem is not theirs. After all, Flake says he chose not to run again because he wouldnt have won in a Republican primary.
But it is their problem. Presidential elections have the power to redefine our politics every four years. That is why every challenger to an incumbent or an incumbents party runs on change.
The 2016 election redefined our politics more starkly than any since 1980. It was stark not just because of the changes in tone and policy that have resulted in 2017 but because Trumps 16-month run was a minute-by-minute preview

People in AZ must now realize how they make very poor choices in elected officials. Oh, never mind, they will never learn.
The voters rejected the ideas of the MSM. We get the news online, not the evening news slants.
...Trumpism will eventually be expelled from the body politic the way a piece of gristle is expelled from the esophagus by the Heimlich maneuver...
As seen through the eyes of a dyed in the wool RINO, while they campaign on lies and stab the voters in the back on Capitol Hill. Trump was the “Heimlich” maneuver that dislodged leathery, green skinned RINOS like Flake and Corker from the swamp.
Jeff Flake has been a very unpopular Senator for a long time. He votes against us in Washington, and helps very little in the State. I know. I have worked with him and he told me he was not supporting Trump. After Trump won he called me (to congratulate me on my victory as County Supervisor) and told me he was eating crow and I asked him if he would do me a favor and just give Trump a chance. What Flake did was what so many establishment Republicans did. They just listened to themselves and the Washington elite. They were all gambling on a Clinton Presidency. They all lost.
The Pud weighs in. Which is to say, there is nothing there.
I seem to remember a guy named Goldwater who was pretty good.
And though a Dem, you don’t get better for a state than Carl Hayden.
I'll help you out, Johnny boy. It has many facets, but can be summed up in five words -- America First; globalists piss off.
I guess Senator Flake had to live up to his name.
Flake flakes.
Unlimited illegal immigration is also “NOT NORMAL”
You brought this on, A-Hole.
You Anti-American Cheap Labor Express Jacka@@e@ CAUSED Trump. He wouldn’t be there without you.
TRUMP IS YOUR FAULT, FLAKEY!
Speaking of globalists, W got beat up on his FB page pretty bad. Click on the pic of him with Clinton and BO. He really stepped in it with his speech.
Hey Theodore. We don’t like Flake, and were going to vote him out. Not good enough for you, eh?
Flake’s opponent last time was a radical Democrat who soaked hospitals. McCain’s was a lunatic Pocahontas wannabe. You would have bitched at us for electing her too.
People like you really bother me. The Arizona GOP saddles us with a terrible choice between cancer and polio and we pick the best one. We can’t beat McCain in a primary, but we have tried.
So we finally get rid of one of them and twerps like you still complain about Arizona. Do not pass go and leave us the hell alone.
If RINOs realizing they’re 20+ points down and cannot win their own party’s nomination, I like the “new normal.”
I hope the new normal is that our elected WILL enforce the laws and secure the border.
I hope the new normal is that our elected will consider the citizens before fraudulently documented foreigners.
Yes it is John, we like winning, not the losing with those you keep prompting. Too bad winning is losing, and losing is winning, in your eyes. But then you are more relevant when the party keeps losing. After all, opposition is easier to play than being a leader. One RINO down, the easy way, and far too many more to go. Perhaps some will shape up before we have to ship them out. Just remember they may have control of the party, but we still have our input, and we are starting to use it after years of non action by those in control of the “Stupid Party”. We will make the party a winning party, or die trying to accomplish that goal.
Podhoretz is a war mongering far left wing neo con who is virulently anti trump. This scum never saw a war he wouldnt want to enter. Not himself mind you. That gutless coward only wants to send other young men off to fight his wars. He is a snivelling little coward dirtbag just like his buddy bill the scumbag kristol, another cowardly POS.
