Maybe they’ll drop the tax on phones to pay for the Spanish American war.

The U.S. government is scrapping rules on telegraphs even though carriers no longer exist,

Reuters says this as if it is a bad thing!

“””The U.S. government is scrapping rules on telegraphs even though carriers no longer exis. ...”””

i get the feeling the author is somewhat dismayed that they would get rid of rules for a technology no longer in use.

But what if the Interweb thingie turns out to just be a fad and big corporations go back into the telegraph business? They will be entirely unregulated!

Apparently these regulations did indeed still cause extra work for phone companies:

Next they'll be trying to scrap governmental rules on keypunch machine operation, and punch card usage...

Maybe get rid of the five cent phone tax on the Spanish-American war that McKinley had put on it?

I remember coming across a wire back in 2005 that I couldn’t figure out at first. Turned out it was an abandoned telegraph wire. Probably been taken down by now.

Could be a bad move... the porn industry could use telegraphs to distribute porn to underage minors if we don't keep them regulated.

This isn’t entirely true - you can still send telegrams...albeit it isn’t part of any large carriers business model anymore.

In any event, another rule they scrapped per a video message from Kushner indicated was the Y2K compliance program - obviously a complete waste of time and resources. How many other thousands of regulations have piled up over the years that no one thought to review and scrap once they no longer had a purpose? They all add up to a lot of wasted $$$.

For me the real question should be; why did we ever need regulations on telegraphs to begin with.

The only law regarding telegraphs should be preventing any interference in their use.

There are probably a couple hundred or so federal employees still regulating telegraphs.

With tongue slightly in cheek, I proposed on various sites that all laws over 100 years old should be sunsetted in 10 years, all others, 5 years. If they prove their worth they can be re-sunsetted for another term.

The politicians would be so busy trying to save some pets, they wouldn’t be able to inflict any new ones on us.
