Objectives. To determine the frequency of loaded handgun carrying among US adult handgun owners, characterize those who carry, and examine concealed carrying by state concealed carry laws.
Methods. Using a nationally representative survey of US adults in 2015, we asked handgun owners (n = 1444) about their past-30-day carrying behavior.
Results. Among surveyed handgun owners, 24% (95% confidence interval[CI] = 21%, 26%) carried loaded handguns monthly, of whom 35% (95% CI = 29%, 41%) did so daily; 82% (95% CI = 77%, 86%) carried primarily for protection. The proportion of handgun owners who carried concealed loaded handguns in the past 30 days was 21% (95% CI = 12%, 35%) in unrestricted states, 25% (95% CI = 21%, 29%) in shall issueno discretion states, 20% (95% CI = 16%, 24%) in shall issuelimited discretion states, and 9% (95% CI = 6%, 15%) in may-issue states.
Conclusions. We estimate that 9 million US adult handgun owners carry loaded handguns monthly, 3 million do so every day, and most report protection as the main carrying reason. Proportionally fewer handgun owners carry concealed loaded handguns in states that allow issuing authorities substantial discretion in granting carrying permits

The “loaded” question seems redundant, and likely to bias the findings toward lower numbers.
Some people define a handgun without a round in the chamber as “unloaded”. Quite a few carry that way, called “Israeli style” or “Condition Three”.
My 31 year old daughter is planning on getting a handgun soon. She asked her Facebook friends for advice. I was shocked at how many of her friends, male and female, carry and many have more than one gun.
I cannot imagine anyone answering truthfully when approached by a stranger, let alone some so called anonymous survey on the web, telephone, or by mail.
Exactly. My chances of contributing to this survey would be nil.
LOL! Not always a good plan to put some things out there on social media.
Smells like BS to me. Over-educated, under-experienced academics spouting nonsense. There are over 600,000 CCW holders in Michigan alone.
Remember...An unloaded firearm is nothing but a very short club.
Define "every day". I do every day I go into crowded public places, which I don't do every day. Proportionally fewer handgun owners carry concealed loaded handguns in states that allow issuing authorities substantial discretion in granting carrying permits
Now there's some real rocket science right there.
I won’t carry a firearm if it isn’t loaded.
Odd headline.
5.56mm
Exactly, unloaded firearms get you dead. Loaded weapons in my possesion are no ones business except my own.
Heck, weapons in your possession are nobody’s business.
I agree. In Washington State (a shall issue state), 9.8% of non-felon adults have a concealed carry permit. Plus I would estimate that there are a lot of folks who don't bother to get a permit still carry.
I went to a "Bite of Seattle" festival in downtown Seattle 20 years ago where it was very crowded. Someone thought it would be funny to light a loud firecracker and when it went off, I saw a whole lot of hands reflexively reaching for their waistbands. Seattle is strapped.
First place I would go for advice on concealed carry. /s.
This poll isn’t even close. The correct poll title would be:
“Number of people who admit to a stranger on the other end of the phone that they carry.”
Now there's some real rocket science right there.
No kidding. "Fewer people carry guns in states that issue fewer permits." Ya gotta have a PHD to sort out complicated data like that! lol
It’s a secret, nobody knows but me and my maker, the way it should be
You wouldn’t ask your friends for advice who already have guns? Why not? Who would you ask?
What’s that saying....
“I carry 3 nites a week and
You guess which Nites!”
Today, they'd be reaching for their crayons and play dough.
I guess I just don’t trust FB. If that is the main way she communicates with her friends, and listens only to trusted friends, I guess it’s ok to ask for that advice only, but nothing about what is purchased etc- that’s where it gets troublesome. And I certainly don’t trust Craigslist.
