This is disgusting being in the middle of this. Most of these guys are still illegal, their practices hazardous, and the people reprehensible.
Pot farms have been enriching brave pot farmers in California since the 1970s at least. Mendocino County was famous for it’s rich pot farmers. They never had to buy or import their product. I used to know a guy who would plant among the rice fields in the Sacramento delta.
I don’t think the cartels just got wind of this practice, but I have heard that cartels are planting their own crops in national forests and planting illegals as guards. Hikers have occasionally come across these dangerous criminals.

As a guy who lives in rural OR, where pot farms are currently legal, the average pot farm is ~10 plants. I see bigger ones sometimes, but most of them are pretty small.
Now I expect that there will be some kind of consolidation in the industry over the next few years, but there will also be a big shakeout when people discover that a legal crop does not command the same prices that an illegal one did.
But, it is still a lot of pot, any way you look at it. If it had been legal years ago, the Mexican cartels would not be a powerful as they are. And crime in the US would be less.
The pot farm I know of in central ca pays $15 an hour to the workers.
