N.C.A.A.: North Carolina Will Not Be Punished for Academic Scandal
NY Times ^ | 10/13/2017

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The N.C.A.A. did not dispute that the University of North Carolina was guilty of running one of the worst academic fraud schemes in college sports history, involving fake classes that enabled dozens of athletes to gain and maintain their eligibility.

But there will be no penalties, the organization said, because no rules were broken.

In a ruling that caused head-scratching everywhere except Chapel Hill, the N.C.A.A. announced on Friday that it could not punish the university or its athletics program because the “paper” classes were not available exclusively to athletes. Other students at North Carolina had access to the fraudulent classes, too.

Noting that distinction, the panel that investigated the case “could not conclude that the University of North Carolina violated N.C.A.A. academic rules,” the N.C.A.A. said in a statement.

The N.C.A.A.’s determination was a major victory for North Carolina after years of wrangling and uncertainty. The athletic department — one of the most high-profile and lucrative ones in the country, and a source of deep pride in the state — could have faced severe penalties, including the loss of championships in men’s basketball, its signature sport.

The N.C.A.A.’s committee on infractions concluded it lacked the power to punish the university under the rules of the N.C.A.A., an association that expects members to govern themselves and establishes a wide berth when it comes to determining what qualifies as academic progress.

A roadmap for the future.

Just like what would happen if it was Albany (NY OR Ga) State right?

it’s crap......North Carolina basically conceded that they don’t care about their academic standards as long as they need the basketball and football programs to thrive.

I wonder if the reason the NCAA doesn’t want to do anything, is because they don’t want to know if this is the tip of the ice berg? Is this happening at many different colleges?

I don't want to ever hear the term “death penalty” in connection with any NCAA investigation again.

So the pretense about being a student-athlete is blown.

Just sign all athletes up for sham classes, keep them eligible grade-wise, give out useless degrees, and recruit by telling the student-athletes, they'll be getting a free ride and a degree, no matter what they do in the classroom. All is legal with the NCAA, as long as the classes and degrees are offered to non-athletes.

Is that where the Black Studies, Feminist Studies, LGBT Studies, and Popular Culture Studies originated?

Did non-athletes actually attend the classes?

1) The NCAA had pretty much concluded after giving SMU the death penalty that they would never, ever do this again. All it did was consign a top-level program to three decades of suckage, and destroy the Southwest Conference, which led to a destructive game of Musical Chairs in conference hopping. Otherwise a post-Sandusky Penn State would certainly have gotten this punishment.

2)The situation now is that these Super Conferences like the ACC, SEC and Big Ten are more powerful than the NCAA itself. Start ticking them off and they may just pick-up their balls and leave to start their own athletic organization, leaving the NCAA with the Troys and Ball States of the world.

I was wondering where James Comey would end up. Did he read the press release at a press conference, or just sign it?

So much for that ‘thriving’ thingy. They are last place in their division of the conference.

These no-show, no-work classes were intended for athletes only but word got out to the general student population and some of them signed up. I doubt there were any classes to attend. They probably had to write their own paper (the only actual work in these classes) since the team's secretary only wrote them for athletes but otherwise the courses were the same for all students.

So the NCAA coddles athletes in college, protecting them from any consequences. Then they “graduate” to the NFL and NBA, and continue living in their media controlled cocoon. Then we shouldn't be surprised the result is a bunch of uneducated, unthankful, unpatriotic thugs.

Tarheels were 11-3 in 2015......this is about their history. If I recall, this whole mess goes back quite some time. And their hoops program is still well respected, so yea, I stand behind the thriving part, especially since I mentioned both in my post.

I’m sure it exists at other colleges and universities. the NCAA proved to be gutless.

One article I saw indicated that the classes were 2-1, non-athletes vs. athletes. They were “African Studies” and “African-American Studies” classes. People with decrees in these “studies” get a lot of government jobs at every level.

Well, jeepers, that makes it alright then. So long as fraud is available to everyone, it’s fine and dandy.

I believe the classes only have to be offered, not necessarily taken.

So, if Louisville had just invited ALL students to attend the free stripper parties, everything would be cool?

Surprise, surprise. If Baylor wasn’t punished for dozens of rapes by football players, did anyone expect the sham NCAA to penalize NC for mere academic cheating? Academics has nothing to do with college athletes.
