New tremors felt as EARTHQUAKE hits North Korea test site - Nuclear program AT RISK
A SERIES of new tremors and landslides have hit North Korea after an earthquake was recorded last night which could cause the collapse of the hermit kingdoms nuclear bomb test site.

Experts suggest the quake, which measured 2.9 on the Richter scale, could mean the region has be destabilised by the countrys September 3 hydrogen bomb test, which caused a 6.3 magnitude earthquake
And they warned the Punggye-ri nuclear site may not be used for much longer to test nuclear weapons.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows the quake was detected just 23 kilometres from Sungjibaegam, a town close to the Punggye-ri nuclear test site and added that it cannot confirm whether the earthquake was natural or man-made.
A statement on the US Geological Survey website reads: "This event occurred in the area of the previous North Korean Nuclear tests.
"The event has earthquake-like characteristics, however, we cannot conclusively confirm at this time the nature (natural or human-made) of the event.
The small quake was detected early on Friday near the North's nuclear test site, South Korea's weather agency said, but unlike quakes associated with nuclear tests, it did not appear to be manmade.
And the region has since been hit by a series of landslide and tremors in the wake of the incident.

The following is from
YTN, S. Korea's cable news channel. They are using data from S. Korea's weather agency, which may not match what USGS or other agencies have(for example, difference in the magnitude of quakes.)

* note: magnitudes listed here are from S. Korea's weather agency which are different from USGS estimates which tend to be higher.
According to their map, the location of quake is moving steadily from south to north heading toward Mt. Paekdu.
The YTN report also says that the magma chamber of Mt. Paekdu extends out 40 km south, which is 60 km away from the N.Korea's test site.

Be a real shame if that nuclear test site collapsed and started leaking a plume of radiation into China or Russia
A real shame

Here is one scenario about what happens if Mt. Paekdu erupts, according to
Chosun Ilbo, a S. Korean daily. This assumes that a high pressure system is in the West and a low pressure system, in the East. In winter, a high pressure system forms in the North West of Korea, and wind is blowing from NW to SE. The first map shows the pattern of volcanic ash spreading after 36 hours, and the second, after 72 hours.

Has Fat Boy initiated a volcanic eruption?
The last time Paektu erupted over 1000 years ago, it spewed 100+ cubic kilometers of debris.

A little HARP from the folks at DARPA.

Works on kinetic energy. Simply a weight that falls from space and hits with the force of a big bomb. Don't know much about this
