Lt. Col. Robert F. McTague, U.S. Army (Ret.) Best Defense office of Second Civil War affairs
If we have a second Civil War, trying to understand what is happening will feel more like Ukraine in 2014 than Virginia in 1861.
Our first Civil War was primarily about slavery, but that was in the context of social and economic models in the South that were ripe for extinction. The Souths reaction was to launch a last-ditch effort to maintain and prop up its way of life at all costs, so it was visceral and violent.
Likewise, Trumps election was an angry, defiant death throe, a angry cry against demographic and economic changes that are in fact irreversible. So, if you are a New Right strategist today call them the Great Disruptors the question is, how do you confront those inevitabilities?
First, you continue at the low level, with some really advanced, effective gerrymandering, as in Wisconsin. You continue to enflame working class whites, who have been ignored by the Democrats for decades. You also try to limit immigration and free trade as much as possible.
Even so, even as they do this, the New Rights Disruptors know they can slow down changes to the nation, but they cant stop them. So whats the next step? You up the ante. You make it holy war. You persuade your base that there is no other way but violence. I believe many, perhaps most, of the members of Trumps base will sign up for that.
Why? Because they will believe they are on the side of good, of right, of Americanism.
Many people in the South and heartland in general often think of themselves as patriotic, loyal Americans, more so than liberals, Yankees, elites and people from the North and urban areas.....

Where did you come up with the goofball idea that an American Civil war would look like street violence? A war is absolutely possible, but the fighting could never be confined to the streets, or to small arms.
I doubt Thomas E. Ricks has spoken to ONE conservative in the past year. So yeah, you're right - it's pure projection. Silly projection too... he has no clue who we are.
How we have operated is how we will operate. He's created a fantasy war more on the level of something a poor eastern Europeans country might engage in.. guerrilla warfare stuff. That's NOT our style.
Ricks’ projected HIS ideas ON to us. I'm guessing he's a radicalized black man living in a different culture - and getting his ideas about us (conservatives) from a communist radical. This has a 'class warfare meets pity party' stench to it...
We're using the tools our Founding Fathers have given us - and those tools are working just fine. In the last 9 years we've taken over most State Houses, Governorships, the House, the Senate, the Presidency and the Supreme Court. That's wining. Big Time Winning. Why on earth would we move to a conventional type violent confrontation? No reason whatsoever. It ain't gonna happen.
Based on what? People go to war because they feel they're losing... we're winning. Why on earth would we go to war? For what?
“The confederacy was founded on the principle that the black man was not the equal to the white....”
The Race Card. The last refuge of a . . . of a . . . person whose rational answer tank is empty.
Question: Was the USA founded on the principle that the black man was not equal to the white?
I don't want to put too fine a point on this but is your point slavery was slowly going away, or wasn't going to just go away?
Umm.
Has anyone ever tried to explain to you that only one side has to initiate violence?
When the social justice warriors realized they might not be able to fabricate enough votes to win the presidency the attacks on Trump’s rallies began.
They are getting more and more desperate every day.
How much more desperate do you think they will get if network and cable television crater due to income loss?
They convinced themselves that Gramsci’s schemes were fool proof. As it turns out that wasn’t so they won’t capitulate and they won’t return to trying to make incremental progress either.
The second official confederate flag.....and the vice president of the confederacys own words. You are familiar with the second national flag of the confederacy are you not?
The second official confederate flag.....and the vice president of the confederacys own words. You are familiar with the second national flag of the confederacy are you not?
Yes.
And before you even ask, yes I know of the song that Southerners have lustily sang from way back. Let's look at the words of the third verse:
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Do you stand respectfully when this historic song is played in public?
Tell me, where did you get the unfortunate idea that playing the Race Card against the South would make the North look good?
I have thought it would be more like Rwanda.
We could avoid it by using the Swiss Method of defense and assassinating the heads of the opposition.
Never thought that the little people should go to wars when it is the elite who want it.
Going to CWII in the US is doing the biding of Soros and other leftist.
Best just to get rid of them.
“Question: Was the USA founded on the principle that the black man was not equal to the white?”
In all the back and forth, I didn’t get to see your response to this question.
Who is playing the race card? I certainly am not. The united states of america was not founded on the idea of white supremacy. The confederacy on the other defended slavery by appealing to it. And like i said it was sll about economics not morality.
It appeared you were playing the race card when you posted this: “The confederacy was founded on the principle that the black man was not the equal to the white....
And this:”The second official confederate flag.....and the vice president of the confederacys own words. You are familiar with the second national flag of the confederacy are you not?”
And this:”The confederacy on the other defended slavery by appealing to it (white supremacy).”
That is an interesting comment.
Can you explain the meaning of the paragraph in Article I of the United States Constitution that begins, “Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned . . .”
This language was voted into the Constitution by the states of New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
And also voting for the language was Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia.
That is an interesting comment.
A famous U.S. politician when running for federal office in a northern state - this was in the 1850’s well after the nation's founding - said to potential voters:
“I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”
Do you know who the politician was and do you know why he said that in a country that - according to your telling - “was not founded on the idea of white supremacy?”
I still think Trump will destroy the left by peeling away 20% of the black vote (by 2020).
Notwithstanding the idiots in the NFL, a lot of blacks are starting to realize how they’ve been used as DESIGNATED LOSERS by the left.
Not so much.
But Ricks didn't write the article. He runs a blog on the magazine's website. The actual author is Lt. Col. Robert F. McTague II, U.S. Army (Ret.)
McTague doesn't seem to have left much of a trail on the Internet. I would be surprised if he was Black, but I guess anything is possible.
Why on earth would we move to a conventional type violent confrontation? No reason whatsoever. It ain't gonna happen.
He put the cart before the horse. He assumed a civil war was coming and then looked for a way in which it could happen, rather than start with the way things are now and see if a civil war is really likely.
NO, it wasn't.
It was founded on the idea that 'CHEAP LABOR' was indispensable to the South's way of life... Southerns were wrong about that... Slavery STOPPED the South from innovating into a more modern culture. It helped in the short run and hurt in the long run. The best thing that happened to the South was an end to cheap labor.
Just like today with cheap Mexican farm workers our farmers have NOT mechanized the process of picking crops. Cheap labor is 3rd world hooey...
Here’s the northern version of Dixie - what song are you referring to?
A second “unofficial” Union version was popular among Union troops, referred to as Union Dixie:
Away down South in the land of traitors,
Rattlesnakes and alligators,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Where cotton’s king and men are chattels,
Union boys will win the battles,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Then we’ll all go down to Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam.[23]
“The New Dixie!: The True ‘Dixie’ for Northern Singers” takes a different approach, turning the original song on its head:
Den I’m glad I’m not in Dixie
Hooray! Hooray!
In Yankee land I’ll took my stand,
Nor lib no die in Dixie[24]
