South Korea developing graphite 'blackout bombs' to paralyse North's electrical grid

South Korea is ready to deploy graphite bombs - also known as "blackout bombs" - that will paralyse North Korea's electrical power plants in the event of war breaking out on the peninsula.

Blackout bombs were first used by the United States in Iraq in the 1990 Gulf War and work by releasing a cloud of extremely fine, chemically treated carbon filaments over electrical components. The filaments are so fine that they act like a cloud, but cause short circuits in electrical equipment.

South Korea is actively looking to increase its defensive capabilities against the North and has been keen to develop graphite bombs because they are not lethal to civilians in surrounding areas.

The weapons have been developed by South Korea's Agency for Defence Development, Yonhap news agency reported, as one element of the Kill Chain pre-emptive strike programme.

"All technologies for the development of a graphite bomb led by the ADD have been secured", a military official said. "It is at the stage where we can build the bombs at any time".

South Korea is bringing forward the deployment of its "three pillars" of national defence by as much as three years as a result of the growing threat posed by Pyongyang's nuclear and missile development programmes.

The three-pronged strategy was originally scheduled to be in place by the mid-2020s, but North Korea's increasingly aggressive and unpredictable behaviour has forced Seoul to revise that timeline.

That is about as useful as paralyzing the Amish electrical grid.

Isn't that a racist device?

Next thing you know the ROKs will be planning to drop watermelons on NK...

Basically it’s long, thin STRIPS of graphite; when they overlay wires, this often short-circuits them.

There can be lasting damage but in most cases you simply REMOVE the strips and in some time you’re good to go.

This isn’t NEARLY as devastating as an EMP.

I say Dirty For Dirty.

LOL. Ya I’ve seen the nighttime satellite photos over North Korea. Very little electricity appears to be used there

I worked at U.S. Steel years ago. I was in electrical maintenance. One of the byproducts of the steel making process is graphite dust. It used to get in the crane resistor banks and short them out. Hours spent replacing burned up resistor banks in 100 degree heat 120 feet in the air over a 200 ton ladle of steel.

Would this weapon platform be considered first strike power only? If little rocket man launches on SK the Norks won’t be around anymore shortly afterwards.

I’m thinking a graphite hand grenade should do it. Or maybe empty the pencil sharper over it.

My apologies, then.

I hope I don’t owe you a new keyboard. I can send you a kleenex or a paper towel though.

WHAT electrical grid?

You know, that electrical grid, the one that the Clinton regime forked over 4 billion over to the NorK-coms so they could look like the rest of the world with cities all lit up at night.
