Puerto Ricans relocating to Florida have already had a significant effect on the politics of the Sunshine State, and the process may well intensify after Hurricane Marias devastation of the island. Since Florida is a hotly contested swing state that has changed the course of presidential elections, its no exaggeration to say that Maria may end up changing the American political landscape permanently.

I think a lot of Puerto Ricans that leave the Island will end up in NYC which won’t change the voter dynamics there. South Florida has a large Cuban Migrant population, but Puerto Ricans tend to gravitate towards NYC.
Yup - hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans moving to Florida, eager to vote Democrat since that’s been working so well for them in Puerto Rico.
It seems the more recent migration waves from PR have moved to FL especially the Orlando area.
There “could” also be a silver lining in that the current corrupt group of the SJ mayor’s party is now totally exposed. Word is getting around that other cities are moving forward but SJ is stuck on this stupid “it’s not political” twit.
I haven’t followed the situation closely, but I think Trump has somewhat hinted that PR’s debts could be wiped away due to the catastrophe.
In return, perhaps they need a period of Reconstruction as was imposed on the South from 1865-1877. If your government is corrupt, if the laws are ignored, if your society needs to be re-invented, then perhaps the heavy hand of federal overseers is what is required.
Personally, I think Puerto Rico is well on its way to becoming a second Haiti. The only way to turn it around, IMO, is to step in and forcibly clean house. And if they don’t want that, then maybe they should pay us back the $73B they owe us.
Just make Peurto Rico a County of Florida after first allocating free parcels there with no-down low-interest manufactured home loans to low-income Americans on fixed incomes like social security. Interject the island with a conservative streak.
Just an idea.
Never let it become a state because of Article V considerations. Same goes for DC.
That is exactly what I was referring to. The populace sees this happening from the populist Trump laying bare how they have been sold down the river of poverty by especially the current political power structure there. I think I recall the current Governor ran a campaign of cleaning the PR swap as a populist. The mayor of SJ is the embodiment of the establishment and therein lies the battle we are experiencing through the corrupt CNN.
Florida may be the closest point at which Puerto Ricans may enter the continental US, but the easiest transit is to points much further north - New York/New Jersey or even Baltimore, as much of the ship passage is through these ports, as compared to Miami or Tampa.
Absolutely true. Once those fools ignored Washington’s advice to avoid foreign entanglements, the distinct American nation was doomed. The incorporation of foreign territories and their non assimilated citizens into America forever changed the country.
From what President Trump said, he’s going to make Puerto Rico a viable entity after we let it go to hell.
MPRGA
How about renaming Puerto Rico “Black Lives Matter,” give anyone of the right color a homestead, then after everyone who thinks the US is racist leaves, grant the island their independence?
Puerto Rico receives 8% of the Federal Welfare Dollars as a Commonwealth whereas it accounts for less than 1% of the U.S. Population. People migrating to the Mainland from there will have a rude awakening when they discover that the “Free Money” won’t be available in FL. My guess is that they will return to PR as soon as Power etc. is restored.
You have not been in the Orlando area lately, I suspect :-) and I would add one other thing, which is that any major migration to FL from PR will exacerbate the endoHispanic animosities among the Cubans, Mexicans, and Puerto Ricans, which in the inner cities of Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Miami will lead to greater incidents of violence, I fear.
ABC lezbo Robyn just claimed 93% of power still out.... true?
They work in Orlando. Key word work. Vote more like the rest of the population. Not in favor of illegals undercutting them. Massive fail that Dims didn’t see coming.
No Change then.
Don’t want to add another island in the chain to Cuba’s Castro.
Americans like Caribbean living. Get on offense and do a reverse migration to make the island a conservative haven.
Hell, tell all Americans that living in PR for > 6 mos of the year qualifies them for 100% tax exemption, then tell American Corporations if they relocate to PR, they can cut their tax liabilities to less than 10%, then watch PR become the wealthiest island in the world like Bermuda (which does much of the same thing).
Only give free parcels and manufactured home loans to middle class Americans on fixed incomes to keep the island affordable and livable.
True...this is just jumping to conclusions. Plus many PRs are pro Trump
