I haven’t followed the situation closely, but I think Trump has somewhat hinted that PR’s debts could be wiped away due to the catastrophe.

In return, perhaps they need a period of Reconstruction as was imposed on the South from 1865-1877. If your government is corrupt, if the laws are ignored, if your society needs to be re-invented, then perhaps the heavy hand of federal overseers is what is required.

Personally, I think Puerto Rico is well on its way to becoming a second Haiti. The only way to turn it around, IMO, is to step in and forcibly clean house. And if they don’t want that, then maybe they should pay us back the $73B they owe us.

That is exactly what I was referring to. The populace sees this happening from the populist Trump laying bare how they have been sold down the river of poverty by especially the current political power structure there. I think I recall the current Governor ran a campaign of cleaning the PR swap as a populist. The mayor of SJ is the embodiment of the establishment and therein lies the battle we are experiencing through the corrupt CNN.

“Puerto Rico is well on its way to becoming a second Haiti.”

I just finished listening to a history of Haiti (at Revolutions Podcast).

Haiti is a sequence of brutal dictators. Started with full bore slave plantations (productive but dictatorial) then succumbed to revolt after revolt as every group tried to claw their way to the top with no qualms about brutal oppression. Eventually whites were driven out (leave or face genocide), and dictators came & went along with other abusers. Massive earthquake + overpopulation kinda finished everything off. Small wonder it’s a mess.

So what for Puerto Rico then?
Perhaps only hope is “brutal capitalism”, strong enforcement of property ownership, aggressive law enforcement, and vicious eradication of corruption. Won’t be popular.
Only alternative is abandonment. Burn out the bad.
