Catalonia always had a separatist streak. During the War of Spanish Succession Catalonia supported the Austrian Hapsburg claimant over the Bourbon claimant supported by the rest of Spain. Catalonia was the center of the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War. Catalonia, the most economically advanced region of Spain, is sick of their tax dollars supporting the rest of Spain.

I’ve been to Catalonia and understand why they’re angry but doesn’t the world have enough countries?

Second Spanish Civil War coming right up.
Actually, I would be surprised if this resulted in any fighting. I don’t think Europe has the stomach for that anymore.

I wonder what part secularism and same-sex-marriage had in this. I’ve read the place is pretty conservative.

People think that Franco and his dislike of Catalonia left Spanish politics back in the 1970s.
They are about to see that the Spanish government still wears his boots, and kept them polished just for this occasion.
Good luck, Catalans....May God help you all.

Catalonia to move to declare independence from Spain on Monday Hope Spain doesn't have any fortresses in their area over which Spain can start a war with them.

Interesting, on Columbus Day (in the US, or least the US I grew up in), there will be another country leaving Spain.
