Catalonia will move on Monday to declare independence from Spain, a regional government source said, as the European Union nation nears a rupture that threatens the foundations of its young democracy and has unnerved financial markets.
Pro-independence parties which control the regional parliament have asked for a debate and vote on Monday on declaring independence, the source said. A declaration should follow this vote, although it is unclear when.

I’ve been to Catalonia and understand why they’re angry but doesn’t the world have enough countries?
Can they take California, New York City and New England with them?
Good for California, I hope they do!
... oh, wait, I guess I read the headline wrong.
Second Spanish Civil War coming right up.
Actually, I would be surprised if this resulted in any fighting. I don’t think Europe has the stomach for that anymore.
I wonder what part secularism and same-sex-marriage had in this. I’ve read the place is pretty conservative.
Increasingly Islamic as well. When I was in Barcelona in June I was struck how many Moslems, and groups of North African men, I saw. Something I hadn't appreciated in previous visits.
The elite globalist/Agenda 21 crowd is willing to commit mass murder if they absolutely have to in order to carry out their plans. They’ll do absolutely anything to keep people from having independence, decentralization, and self-determination.
People think that Franco and his dislike of Catalonia left Spanish politics back in the 1970s.
They are about to see that the Spanish government still wears his boots, and kept them polished just for this occasion.
Good luck, Catalans....May God help you all.
WE actually need more countries. Smaller units, decentralization. More competition, more freedom. We could go the other way and have fewer countries, There are those who want just one.
Hope Spain doesn't have any fortresses in their area over which Spain can start a war with them.
It appears the Catalans aren’t choosy about allies in their ongoing war with Madrid, because Catalonian autonomy if it comes to pass will create a huge ISIS enclave on the continent.
The recent terror attack in Barcelona is already mostly forgotten.
wrong
Barcelona is staunchly catholic
Basques next?
It's up to the people to decide for themselves if they want to be independent.
As Abraham Lincoln said:
"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better-- This is a most valuable, -- a most sacred right -- a right, which we hope and belive, is to liberate the world
“We actually need more countries.”
Not a Catalonia state. Catalonia is getting exceedingly Islamic, and harbors many a Muzzie terrorist now. Last thing we need is another potential terrorist state. Spain knows that if Catalonia breaks away, they will have nothing but problems with a new state on their border chock full of Muzzies crossing over into Spain to wreak mayhem. Bad news for Spain and bad news for the rest of the world too.
“...the Spanish government still wears [Franco’s] boots, and kept them polished just for this occasion.”
IMO that’s a stretch. Spain has been governed by Socialists since 1981, hardly something Franco would approve of.
Now...far more feared than the Spanish military is the big, bad, reviled Guardia Civil. Let’s see what their role is in the days ahead.
Remember, they tried to overthrow the King.

I’m in New England and no, we aren’t going. (I know you were being rhetorical)
If anyone can say they don’t have liberals in their state, they can make that request. Even the reddest of states have the cancer, and thinking it can be cut out of one part of the body and not another is going to result in a dead patient.
That includes Texas and Florida.
