After nearly a century of building vehicles powered by fossil fuels, General Motors — one of the world’s largest automakers — announced Monday that the end of GM producing internal combustion engines is fast approaching.
The acceleration to an all-electric future will begin almost immediately, with GM releasing two new electric models next year and an additional 18 by 2023.
At a media event at GM’s technical campus in Warren, Mich., on Monday, Mark Reuss, the company’s chief of global product development, said the transition will take time, but the course has been set.
“General Motors believes in an all-electric future,” Reuss said. “Although that future won’t happen overnight, GM is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles.”

Reuss avoided naming the year when the auto giant will cease producing gas and diesel vehicles, noting that the company is too large to make such an estimate, according to USA Today.

That said, to me, this is one of those “feel good drive up the stock” statements that can be forgotten in a heart beat if the market isn’t asking for it (and gov isn’t requiring it).
You could just as easily say “IF the technology exists that enables fast charging, long range, cheaper TCO, etc. - we will definitely be doing it”. Why wouldn’t you? ...they’ll never risk the company on promises that can’t be made though.
I’ve been that way since 2008.. welcome to the party.. ;)

How can you control a population that can just hop in their vehicles and travel hundreds of miles at a time, on road or off? How can you tolerate fuel that can be stockpiled by individuals easily and lasts indefinitely?
But tyrants love electric cars. If you want to prevent mobility, all you have to do is throw a switch at Central Command, and all of those electric vehicles stop moving within a week. You can add controls so that every time an electric car is connected to the grid, it communicates its location and charge state to a central database, and perhaps a log of everywhere it has been and when.
Tyrants just love that sort of thing.

A solar roof; what a great idea. So between November and March, when it’s mostly cloudy and daylight is short, I guess I won’t be driving anywhere. Better stock up the larder for winter.
Come back in 5 years. The story will be that electric didn’t work out. Seems that electric cars ground to a halt during snow storms, hurricanes, ice storms, earthquakes and other disasters. There was no way to charge them. Rescue vehicles, ambulances and cop cars that converted to electric were also abandoned by the side of the road. People died.
Without a plan to survive the shortage of lithium. They’re either insane or dishonest.

What a mistake. What about natural gas, they have dome that before and it makes more sense. All electric is not going to work.
I have an idea for a fleet of black smoke belching coal powered recharging trucks that will load up stranded EVs with dead batteries and charge them up as they carry them on to(wards) their original destination. Maybe make them big and fancy with a special customer lounge with WiFi and a big screen maybe even a shower and hot tub.

In your dreams, GM! Cars with internal combustion engines (better than anything you’ve ever made) will always be available at Mecum, Barrett-Jackson, etc., to say nothing of new startups that will gladly fill the void. I’ll trust the free market to keep prices reasonable. Hmm, I wonder if Mecum and Barrett-Jackson are publicly traded? Can’t be sure, but if so, it might be a good time to buy them???
