After nearly a century of building vehicles powered by fossil fuels, General Motors one of the worlds largest automakers announced Monday that the end of GM producing internal combustion engines is fast approaching.
The acceleration to an all-electric future will begin almost immediately, with GM releasing two new electric models next year and an additional 18 by 2023.
At a media event at GMs technical campus in Warren, Mich., on Monday, Mark Reuss, the companys chief of global product development, said the transition will take time, but the course has been set.
General Motors believes in an all-electric future, Reuss said. Although that future wont happen overnight, GM is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles.
[Teslas Model 3 has mass appeal. That doesnt mean you can afford it.]
Reuss avoided naming the year when the auto giant will cease producing gas and diesel vehicles, noting that the company is too large to make such an estimate, according to USA Today.

No need, for a small fee I will pick up stranded eco-dummies and their dead cars and take them both to work in luxurious comfort in my coal powered mobile charging station. When their smartphones tell them that their smartcars are fully charged I can stop and let them off to continue their commute, even if it’s only for another 20 minutes.
That’s why I bought a 2017 F350 diesel.
And just how old was this rental truck with a V10? Yes some had the spark plug issue.
Don’t blame you, I’m through with them too. And I had much less reason to do so.
Eve seen a lithium battery burn?
Stupid.
While you’re taking an hour to charge your car I will be speeding by in my v8. Fast recharge times are not even on the horizon.
Lesssseeeee. WE bailed them out.
How much torque does an electric motor produce when the battery is dead?
And engines that are totally hackable.
And engines that are totally hackable.
There is NO WAY I want any of my vehicles connected to any network, with the possible exception of a laptop not connected to a network connected to a vehicle for diagnostics/possibly updates under very controlled circumstances.
Quality engines have helicoiled spark plug threads.
Learned that on 60s VW bugs...
I guess they need to include a hand cranked generator, like those emergency radios....
I am an electrical engineer and it is appalling to see technology pushed beyond it’s current capability. They are not even working on the right problems. Who cares about range when what we need to see is quick recharge times. We are not seeing that yet. When that breakthrough occurs, if ever, then maybe start mainstreaming the technology.
There are a TON of wires (and "wall worts" associated with all of the "wireless" stuff that I have kicking around.
I welcome their identification of the sources of the electricity.
and new life for coal and radioactive technologies.
Yes, in my early drone experiments.
Both are pretty nasty batteries.
The embodied energy in a Tesla battery system is more than the vehicle will use in its entire useful life.
It’s remarkable that either is being entertained as a practical long term solution.
“What is the environmental impact of replacing all the batteries on an electric car that frequently?”
I personally don’t give a shit about the “environment”. The earth is here to serve Man. Man will use technologies to subdue the “mother” nature and exploit its natural resources. If the future points to electricity or hydrogen cells or solar — so be it. And if those are better for the environment, assuming they are even better for the market, then so be it. Bring the best. Lets have compeition. No gubmint subsidies though. That includes gubmint using the military to protect the oil pipelines in the Middle East.
Mine has 180K too. No rust yet. I have had the brake system replaced so far. But the best thing is I have no payments. I figure if I save enough for fixes I will do much better than getting a brand new Yukon with all the bells and whistles and the mucho payments. What I probably ought to do is buy parts and store them. Man, I sure do like my Yukon.
