Dear Reader (and everyone else I have failed),
I would respect Roy Moore a lot more if he began his victory speech last week by taking his gavel and hurling it at the CNN cameras in the back of the room, shouting Are you not entertained!
But, unlike Russell Crowes Maximus, Moore cant, or wont, let the mask slip to show his disdain for the spectacle he has become. Whether thats because hes extremely disciplined in his cynicism or because hes extremely sincere in his jackassery, I have no idea. Nor do I really care.
Whats going on with his voters, on the other hand, matters to me. Which brings me back to this gladiator thing. Gladiatorial games served a number of purposes in Ancient Rome. First of all, what else are you going to use all those Carthaginians for? Blood sport was also entertainment, of course, but with a political purpose. By extolling violent victory in battle as the highest aesthetic value, the Romans kept the populace committed to imperial expansion (many of the most popular games were reenactments of glorious Roman victories). By legitimizing and glorifying cruelty, emperors had a convenient tool for terrorizing their enemies, keeping the people in line, and satisfying their own sadism, as when Commodus tied prisoners together and clubbed them to death, pretending that he was Hercules slaughtering giants. Or when a heckler in the stands jeered at one of Domitians favorite gladiators and the emperor responded by having him pulled from his seat and thrown to wild dogs in the arena.

Ben Sasse is another phony conservative.
If I post anything from an opposition website, it’s because I want to hear you all bash it. I get a kick out of it :)
You got about 500 words on there and he hasn’t said a thing yet. No thanx.
I don’t respect Jonah and he is wrong.
Stupid nevertrumper can’t admit he was wrong, has to keep at it as we take out his swamp friends one by one.
Jonah has sand in his vagina again!
Your respect for this knob notwithstanding, no click from me for NR. Waste of electrons.
Sorry. I have read his crap.for years. Let me correct that to a true statement for you.
Goldberg is worried about the maintaining the flow of illegal aliens and sees Moore as a threat to that.
You're welcome.
LSD=Lite Smartalec Demagogue
If only enough of us could just forget what we know about him, this latest attempt just might work..../s
Keep whining Jonah, these Trump voters DON'T forget so easily.
On a personal note, FUJG! LMAO how scared you are about Judge Moore's accendency to the Republican WIN column.
Jonah was an abused child and suffers PTSD from the effects...
Actually Goldberg's position is more nuanced than that regarding Moore, but you have to skip/ignore the Gladiator stuff to get there.
He's essentially calling Moore a conservative religious bigot cloaking himself in populist rhetoric to appeal to Trump voters while pursuing his own agenda.
Luther Strange would have made a more reliable Trump ally.
Goldberg was destroying the once proud reputation of National Review long before Trump became a candidate for President. He’s a CINO and is the main reason I cancelled my subscription.
I feel the same way about Jonah Goldberg.
He may have a point about Roy Moore, but the snarkiness undercuts whatever argument he's trying to make.
>> Goldberg’s position is more nuanced than that regarding Moore, but you have to skip/ignore the Gladiator stuff to get there <<
I’d say that’s a kinda naive comment, because it assumes that people have actually read the article. Trouble is, reading the articles is seriously frowned upon around here.
SEN, MOORE’S General election Dec opponent is not a squishy Republican. It’s much worse. His opponent is Doug Jones, an ultra-liberal zealot best known as one of the most liberal members of Bill Clinton’s Justice Department under Janet Reno. I cannot tell you how important your continued financial support will be.
