Set to one side that the reason most Americans can sing the words to their national anthem is that for generations, every American attending a professional baseball game has stood to look at the flag while someone sings The Star-Spangled Banner. Many Americans think the last words of the national anthem are Play ball!
Baseball is about baseball. The NFL and NBA seem to be about more things than I can processsome of them political, some of them personal.
Baseball has an informal code of on-field conduct, which has held for a hundred years. The NFL doesnt seem to have an enforceable code of anything.
Last Sunday, after the New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. caught a touchdown pass, Mr. Beckham got down in the end zone and imitated a dog urinating on a fire hydrant, which the opposing Philadelphia Eagles (who won) took as mockery of their team.
From Babe Ruth 90 years ago to Aaron Judge now, when you hit a home run, you run around the bases and into the dugout. Thats it. No end-zone antics that suggest the sport itself takes a back seat to a personality.
After the Yankees Mr. Judge hit his 50th home run this week, a record for a rookie, his teammates had to force him out of the dugout to wave to the cheering crowd.

I heard Henniger talk about this on Varney today. Unfortunately, I don’t have a WSJ subscription.
Article is behind a paywall.
Baseball, the American pastime
NFL football, the sport of Antifa and BLM
I loved what the bombers were doing last night with the “dugout interviews” after HRs. Could help people forget the NFL.....
Baseball is great, I am very happy it will come back now as The American game, and just in time for everyone to enjoy October playoffs. Get rid of the replay, if there is any question the crew chief looks at the big screen and makes the call.
I’m expecting this crap to start showing up at all professional sporting events.
Hey, it’s better than soccer.
Baseball - this field, this game - it’s a part of our past, Ray...
It reminds us of what once was GOOD. And can be again...
(field of dreams)
Why do I love baseball?
It’s beautiful and intricate and civilized.
Except when there is a brawl on the mound or at home plate.
And that is just as beautiful!
The Cubs started doing that a mont ago when someone left a microphone in the dugout.
MLB has pride nights now where they celebrate sodomy by having the sodomites kiss each other on the kiss-cam. NHL does this too. I am now done with both leagues in addition to the NHL. I hope it all comes tumbling down.
What????
If you want REAL “diversity,” you go to baseball. Latin America, Cuba, Australia, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, and every version of America. Along with jazz and the Constitution, it is America’s gift to the ages.
Football and hockey used to be what I watched while waiting for spring training to return. As of now, that is only half true, and I hope it does not become all false.
Please, MLB, don’t screw this up.
And, George Will really, REALLY likes baseball, too. So there’s that as well.
Why were the Reds wearing “Las Rojas” shirts one night recently and then green ones another day or 2 later?
Beats me, but I’m not supportive of focusing on segments of an audience for ingratiation purposes.
