Moving company says more people leaving Chicago than any other major city

The nation's biggest mover is corroborating Census data showing the exodus of residents from Chicago and across Illinois.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Census released its report that said most Illinois' cities are shrinking in population, with the entire state estimated to have lost 58,456 people on net in 12 months ending in July.

United Van Lines tracks how many people come and go from the nation's larger cities every summer. They found more people moved from Chicago than any other state.

"We're really seeing a trend of a lot of people moving out of big cities on the east coast and the Midwest and tending to migrate west and south," spokesperson Melissa Sullivan said. The Windy City led the nation in percentage of departures in 2016 as well.

United Van Lines' numbers confirm Illinois as a state is seeing more people depart than arrive.

"The places that top our list of destinations every year have either growing job markets or places that have a lot to offer retirees," Sullivan said. "It definitely is a trend that goes beyond Chicago because the state is showing similar trends."

Notably, the Census estimated 40,000, or 5 percent, of Chicago's black population left in the 12 months ending in July.

High taxes and lack of job opportunities often are cited by residents who leave for other states.

Wow! I guess if people have or make enough money, it doesn't matter how much they are taxed. A lot seem content staying in IL.

You were probably smart to get out and hopefully will make up for your loss. But I'm sorry your dreams were spoiled.

I didn’t know that Chicago was a state.

Why would people want to leave a Socialist paradise like Chicago?
Perhaps they need to build a Berlin type wall to keep them from leaving.

Indeed, when I first arrived in Chicago in 1962, one could take public transportation after midnight, as I often did, and did not fear getting mugged. I found a job in Chicago within a week, even though economy was on slow side. Left Chicago area in 1988. Only things I miss are Chicago style thick crust pizza at Uno’s and Italian beef sandwiches at Portillo’s.

Which means that Chicago is exporting their hellholish ways to other parts of the country. There goes the neighborhood! In mostly red states.

Yeah, Chicago has great food , I miss it too.

BTW Portillo’s is now in Tampa, Brandon and growing.

I make occasional "Pilgrimages" there.

Fake news - there are 195 new condo projects in Chicago being built today - with more coming on line. 54 new high rises in the down town area - mix of hotels and condos. There are waiting lists for apartments in the better neighborhoods. Construction projects every where downtown and the North side of the city.

Mexico’s 2nd most effective Congressman represents some of them.

Just because he has an “hispanic” background that doesn’t make him “Mexican” even though his district includeds every Neighborhood which is decidedly Mexican . Gutierez was and is a Puerto Rican activist.

When it comes to “hispanics” there is one heck of a difference in attitudes between nationalities towards each okther despite using the same language and having similar lastnames.

I know he is Puerto Rican, which is why it is ironic that he is Mexico’s 2nd most effective member of Congress.
He was born a citizen and yet advocates for fraudulently documented foreigners.

Yeah, I heard about the Tampa Portillo’s. That would be 3 hrs & 10 min drive each way. I will just try to restrain myself.

Hi rises are not the definition of desirable city to live. Cabrini Green was all high rises, and it was one of the worst crime infested high rises ever.
