President Trump has flirted with many culture wars before. This weekend, he may have set off a full-fledged one with lasting implications. On Friday night, Trump said NFL players who kneel during the national anthem should be fired. Then Saturday, he disinvited the Golden State Warriors, the NBA champions, from a White House visit because superstar Stephen Curry suggested that the team should skip it in protest of Trump.

All of this comes shortly after the White House suggested that ESPN host Jemele Hill should be fired for calling Trump a “white supremacist.” All three events pit Trump against black sports figures whose political statements he believes are out of bounds or unpatriotic. And the entire situation seems to be reaching a tipping point.

This is preposterous. It has nothing to do with race. It has to do with patriotism and lack thereof on the part of some sports figures. If they don't like it here, they should move to N. Korea or Cuba or wherever.

Culture war is a good term for this. You define a country as a place with borders, language and culture. I don’t care what color you are as long as you act like an American. Disrespecting America while claiming to be an American makes you a hypocrite.

And the entire situation seems to be reaching a tipping point.

And that tipping point is going to be attendance and revenue for the NFL and the NBA. MLB too, if they choose to get into politics as well. The main fan base for the NFL is white and middle-aged. A lot of them are Trump voters. It's one thing to let one or two players disrespect the flag during the national anthem - it's another to get involved so completely in a culture war against the president and conservatives.

Late night television is now a mindless echo chamber of left-wing propaganda, with viewership way down. Pro sports are clearly heading the same way.
