When Congress hauls in Equifax CEO Richard Smith to grill him, it can start by asking why he put someone with degrees in music in charge of the company’s data security.
And then they might also ask him if anyone at the company has been involved in efforts to cover up Susan Mauldin’s lack of educational qualifications since the data breach became public.
It would be fascinating to hear Smith try to explain both of those extraordinary items.
If those events don’t put the final nails in his professional coffin, accountability in the U.S. is officially dead.
Equifax “Chief Security Officer” Susan Mauldin has a bachelor’s degree and a master of fine arts degree in music composition from the University of Georgia. Her LinkedIn professional profile lists no education related to technology or security.
This is the person who was in charge of keeping your personal and financial data safe — and whose apparent failings have put 143 million of us at risk from identity theft and fraud. It was revealed this week that the massive data breach came due to a software vulnerability that was known about, and should have been patched, months earlier.

But SOME training would have been good.
CIOs and CISOs are members of e-staff and frequently do not tech or security backgrounds. They often are more steeped in planning, budgeting, people management, and corporate politics than tech.

Absolutely. There is no degree in “computer security” anyhow.
She may not have been hired to set up a firewall but she should know what one is, how it works and what it does and doesn’t do.

I know a fellow that had a thirty year career with Equifax. At the point where he was being moved into the upper management ranks and become vested in his pension, this fellow got kicked to the curb so a top dog could bring up someone unqualified.
I hope they burn.
If the person was qualified by equivalent work experience I think its unimportant their degree was outside the field.
I was a drop-out. In the later part of my career the engineers, architects, CPAs and lawyers often worked at my direction and on my staff.
And you and others do not know if she did or did not. I’m not trying to defend her but the comments in the discussion thread are weak, show bias, and are uninformed. Besides, the key point, is she personally or by her group’s actions or inactions responsible for the hack? The hack did not occur because she is a woman, a white woman, a music major, etc., did it? Maybe, and more likely, Equifax is a universally hated company or at least its line of business is. It is a data-rich target.
I have a relative who fits that model, and he’s quite successful.
As for degrees.. at 50+ years old I’ve worked with highly valued colleagues with degrees in subject matter that does not normally mate to their role.

What a bass remark that was! I sense some discord ahead. Just because one is a Music Major, one should be able to scale any heights presented. Not majoring in security is a minor problem, and I am sure she would have been able to improvise.
(Or maybe my being rhapsodic about her abilities are just a fantasy.)

How do you get that from her Resume? She lists herself as a professional. Professional what? Musician? dog walker? Programmer? Printer ink changer?
