The NFL’s highest rated TV window got off to its worst start in more than a decade, though breaking weather coverage may have played a role.
The Week 1 NFL national window, featuring Seahawks-Packers in 89% of markets, had a 12.7 rating and 22.8 million viewers on FOX Sunday afternoon — down 18% in ratings and 17% in viewership from last year (15.5, 27.5M) and down 6% and 2% respectively from 2015 on CBS (13.5, 23.3M). Last year’s window featured Giants-Cowboys and the 2015 telecast featured Ravens-Broncos.
The 12.7 rating is the lowest for the Week 1 NFL national window in 14 years, since FOX posted a 12.5 for coverage featuring Falcons-Cowboys in 2003. The previous low over that span was a 13.0 for coverage featuring Cowboys-Browns in 2008, also on FOX. It was the least-watched Week 1 national window since that 2008 telecast, which had 20.9 million. Earlier in the day, regional action featuring Philadelphia-Washington in 51% of markets had a 6.6 rating and 11.3 million viewers — down 28% in both measures from last year (9.2, 15.8M) and down 27% and 24% respectively from 2015 on CBS (9.0, 14.9M). It was the lowest rated and least-watched Week 1 NFL telecast — in any window — since the first half of that 2008 doubleheader on FOX (5.1, 7.9M). Competing news coverage of the approaching Hurricane Irma may have affected the numbers. The Weather Channel averaged 4.3 million viewers from 1-8 PM ET Sunday (on the comparable day last year, the network’s top hour had 284,000).

I will say that which none other dare say - The NFL is now officially in a death spiral.

I agree. No NFL in my house.
It’s not just the political stuff, though that is a big part. The games have begun to stink and people notice. When the Giants were horrible in the late 60s to the early 80s I watched all 60 min each Sunday. This past Sunday night when the score was only 6-0 I took to watching Star Trek on H&I. And I’m not a big fan of Trek. The game was just that bad.
I have watched less in recent years, even before the Kapernick nonsense.
My key reasons for watching less:
1. It’s tedious to watch a game on TV. They have so many commercials. It takes 3 1/2 hours to play an NFL game nowadays, because of commercials and replay reviews stretching things out.
2. You lose the flow and momentum of the game. They go to a commercial break after a TD or FG, which is a natural break. But then they come back for the kickoff, then go to another commercial bloc, at a time when the interrupt the natural flow of the game.
3. Girl sideline reporters who add nothing to the game. They don’t know anything about football, yet have become a fixture on football broadcasts. And almost every sideline reporter is a woman. Why?
I’d add to #2 of your list that the games are also insufferable due to penalty after penalty being called.
I’d call it a “good thing!” Any time any element of the MSM suffers a loss of revenue, it’s definitely cause for celebration.
Agreed, some games it seems they are calling a penalty just about every play. Now that you mention it, that is irritating also. it’s like sometimes you see a play, then you just are waiting to see if there was a flag on the play.
Die, NFL. Die.

Exactly...nothing like a play with multiple penalties, and is reviewed on a coaches challenge and I’m done.
I haven’t watched a game in years. I don’t even tune into the Superbowl anymore.
Have the rule changes made the game less interesting?
One thing I don’t like is the women on the sidelines talking as if they know what it’s like to play the game.
Every so often I happen to accidentally catch a short clip of one of women on the field. It’s very annoying to me.
Give me a guy that has been on the field getting his ass kicked under dire circumstances. They will instantly have credibility to me.
It’s not necessarily a sex thing either. If they put a dandy (guy on the sidelines who hadn’t played) on the sidelines, I wouldn’t care for it either.

They're blaming the hurricane. Just like last year when they blamed the election. I really think they know why but corporate heads think if they tell these lies often enough the population will actually believe them.
They believe the line from Goebbels about telling a lie often enough and long enough it will become truth.
