 ~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota

minot1

Minot Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force installation in Ward County, North Dakota, 13 miles north of the city of Minot via U.S. 83. In the 2010 census, the base was counted as a CDP with a total population of 5,521. Minot AFB is the home of two major wings: the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing, both of the Global Strike Command (AFGSC).

minot6minot6minot6minot6minot6

minot5

Originally opened in 1957 as an Air Defense Command (ADC) base, Minot AFB became a major Strategic Air Command (SAC) base in the early 1960s, with both nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles and manned bombers and aerial refueling aircraft.

When SAC was inactivated in 1992, the nuclear mission of the base was divided between two commands, with missiles going to the Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) and manned bombers to the Air Combat Command (ACC). With the establishment of the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) in 2009, missiles and manned bombers (excluding the B-1 Lancer) were transferred from AFSPC and ACC to AFGSC in the late 2009 and early 2010.

minot4

The 5th Bomb Wing (5 BW) is an element of the Global Strike Command (AFGSC) and is the host unit at Minot AFB; its commander is dual-hatted as the installation commander and the unit is responsible for all base services, such as housing/billeting, medical, MWR, library, Officers' Club, etc.

The primary mission of the 5th Bomb Wing is to maintain and operate B-52H bombers assigned to the 23d Bomb Squadron and the 69th Bomb Squadron. Minot AFB is one of two remaining bases with B-52s; the other is Barksdale AFB in Bossier City, Louisiana.

minot3

The 91st Missile Wing (91 MW) of the Global Strike Command (AFGSC) is responsible for maintaining the Minuteman III nuclear missiles, located in three main fields to the north, west, and south of the base. Previously known as the 91st Space Wing, it was renamed as a missile wing in June 2008.

It is one of the Air Force’s three operational intercontinental ballistic missile units, with Malmstrom AFB at Great Falls, Montana, and F.E. Warren AFB at Cheyenne, Wyoming. In addition to its missiles, the wing also operates a squadron of UH-1N Twin Huey helicopters in support of missile and launch control sites.

Howdy, PRO!

I’m having a blast reading the comments in your thread. Got it open in another window. :-)

Yes, we’ve had the remnants of Irma over us the past two days. Steady rain and a little wind all day yesterday, clouds and a little drizzle today. And chilly! Temps in the low 60s. Two more days of this before it finally heads off of us.

I spent the afternoon printing and folding some little brochure thingies for this weekend. There’s an annual fall festival and our Republican women’s group always has a booth set up. My job is to come up with a list of all the TN “R” candidates running for the various offices for people to take home.
Other than that, been a dull day.

The kittehs are more settled today than they were yesterday. The sound of the wind and rain had them wound up tight and they drove me up the walls.

Howdy, Kathy!

No surprise you’re slammed at work. It’s “that” week. :-( I hope you don’t end up with a lot of homework tonight.

I hope it forgets about trying to rain and DOES it. :-)

We’ve gotten a little over 2 inches from Irma’s remnants so far. Didn’t have winds too strong yesterday but it was still a bit gusty.

Sorry your brother wasn’t as lucky. The good thing is it hit the garage roof and not the main part of the house.
Gotta look for those silver linings. :-)

Why Not Minot?

Hey, hey...hahaha...

Some of us DO live near there...I know, I know, cold, wind, mosquitos, heat, humidity, mosquitos---did I say mosquitos?...

But one thing that holds true is that the locals, the ones with a brain and a heart, anyway, value and praise and treasure their nearby airmen.

God bless Diana and family for waving the flag! Travel safely, many thanks!

I’d be climbing the walls! I guess thank goodness for smartphones and cell service so she was able to contact me in time to do the thread. Her home phone wasn’t working either. Weird deal. But maybe she’ll read a book. :) Or entertain herself like I do on her tablet.
