Democrats choose union over Tesla in California cap-and-trade deal

Democratic lawmakers and Gov. Jerry Brown are siding with organized labor in its battle with automaker Tesla, inserting a provision in last-minute legislation to spend $1.5 billion in cap-and-trade money.

The legislation would inject the state into an increasingly acrimonious union organizing campaign at automaker Tesla’s Fremont plant. Manufacturers that want to be eligible for the state’s zero-emission vehicle rebate program – a major driver of Tesla sales – would need to be certified by the state labor secretary “as fair and responsible in the treatment of their workers.”

Tesla buyers are eligible for rebates of up to $2,500, but that perk could be imperiled by the legislation’s worker-treatment language.

The United Auto Workers union has set out to organize thousands of Tesla workers, some of whom allege that the company had illegally intimidated them. The National Labor Relations Board’s Oakland regional office filed a complaint against the company late last month.

With cap-and-trade’s future assured, the Brown administration, legislative leaders and dozens of interest groups have spent recent weeks negotiating how to spend hundreds of millions of dollars generated by the program.

Sixty percent of the money is already committed to high-speed rail, housing near transit and other programs, with 40 percent to be allocated each year by the Legislature. Officials estimate that portion totals more than $1.4 billion, including a beginning balance of $843 million.

What are Tesla’s options? Got figure their biggest market is California, particularly in Silicon Valley where people have more money than common sense much of the time. It is also an area where a lot of money comes with families from outside the country.

An “Auto Manufacturer” has no business being in California anyway. The industry suppliers and logistics are located in the heartland. They started out there because of all the technology.

But his competition has caught him and the big Tier 1s are a long way from where they are building cars.

Elon should just close the plant, and walk away to a ‘Right to Work’ State, and start from scratch.....................

Ha, ha. Elon Musk’s California cousins just smacked the snot out of him. That Musk failed to grasp what his liberal California cousins would surely do to him and his business is quite instructive. He built there anyway.

Echos of Preston Tucker, the man and the car....

Or John DeLorean.

Drained and illegalized out of business.

Maybe Tesla is a huge advance in automotive engineering. We may never know.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Musk just lived up to his rhetoric and accepted everything the State of California wants to do for, I mean to him.??

Something tells me that this is a fake issue. Musk is very liberal, and so is California, and so are the unions.

What this tells me is that, California and Musk are getting ready to get a lot of publicity for Tesla, as a company that cares about their workers and union workers. That will all come about when Musk and union leaders and CA government officials hold a news conference to announce the mutual admiration between Musk and the unions and the government leadership. The “agreement” will be a farce, but it will make Musk and Tesla look good, and the California government officials.

His only “business” is stealing taxpayer money to fund a PC pipe dream.

...

The Tesla plant used to be Toyota’s and they walked away from it. I think Tesla got a really good deal on it.

SpaceX is only 15 years old and already dominating the commercial launch market. They are forcing competitors to lower their prices, and the taxpayers spend a lot of money in that market.

Tesla is number one in owner satisfaction according to Consumer Reports.
