I have a lab laying on my feet under the desk right now and have never been without a dog in my entire life. I take in strays, I have a large 3/4 acre fenced backyard perfect for dogs, and they sleep with me at night.

And yourself?

I’m not “post-casting” and I’ve not been “down-casting” I’ve been saying all along that I thought it would graze Cuba and be slowed, and that I though a track up the west coast of FL was improbable. What is inaccurate about that?

The track up the west coast of Florida part, since that happened. In other words, you guessed, and got it half-right.

but in fact you are an aggregator, not possessed of any particular training, knowledge or relevance outside of that, unless you’re now claiming to be a meteorologist.

I also don't make forecasts and clearly indicate if I am guessing at the direction things will take, unlike some folks.

I suppose you are claiming to be a meteorologist, because if you aren’t your reply is rather arrogant with no basis.

My basis is on history. I have followed hurricanes for years and learn more each year. Sometimes the worst case happens, sometimes it doesn't. Harvey did. Irma didn't. But you can't wait until you know for sure to evacuate when the worst case is staring you in the face. And to forecast after the fact? Lame.

... and some are clinging to the notion that the damage done was as severe as forecast when they should be giving thanks to God that it was not.

The evacuation was excessive because the storm was hyped, there were millions on the move, quite a number of whom were not in any evacuation zone. Are you willing to acknowledge this? That is a problem and it will come back to bite anyone who thinks it’s a good thing when Florida actually is hit with a 4 or a 5. It’s not an if, it’s a when and creating resistance to evacuation due to overblown media accounts is a very inadvisable thing looking to the future. Can you “future-cast?”

From all reports, the portion of the Keys between Key West and Marathon had major hurricane damage, Key West was fortunate to be in a somewhat weaker portion of the outer western eyewall and had more moderate damage.

Another relatively fortunate break was that storm surge arrived arouhd Naples at low tide, and it was not quite as large an increase as expected.

Tampa Bay got the full benefit of the earlier landfall than the official forecast had been suggesting.

Daytona Beach to Jacksonville got the reverse side of that coin by being closer to the track, and in line for larger storm surge than would have been the case with the official track verifying.

All in all, Florida probably got off relatively lightly but there are two or three pockets of severe impacts; even so what could have been a top-five damage storm (in the 50 billion range) turned into a moderate event (probably 5 to 10 billion overall in Florida, obviously quite a high damage figure in the Caribbean islands).

The reality is somewhere between the worst case scenario and the “nothing much happened” camps. We won’t see another Irma in six years, the name will disappear from the name rotation because of the carnage in the islands.

Well, I very much appreciate your work. You’ve caused me to look at and see the sky and the dynamics of weather differently, and to look more closely.

(Are you going to be around for that squiggly Jose? That may be coming my way!)

‘On site’ is better than the message we have of no estimate :-( No on generator for apt. I was struck by deatth of power crews. Only saw one working (Indialantic) and two crews in transit.

I’ve observed hurricanes myself, since childhood when my family’s beach place was wiped out. So, you’re not alone in that regard.

I do want to thank you for the work you do on these threads, however your bedside manner could be better, it’s really not personal to most of us so it should not be to you. And, try not to get too vested in any one outcome, since hurricanes are notoriously capricious and will do what they’re wont to do.

(by earlier landfall I meant to say more southerly landfall, that minimized the wind and storm surge potential considerably — if Tampa Bay had been Naples with exactly that same landfall, it would be quite a mess now). And as late as Sunday morning that was the expectation based on the official forecasts.

Are you saying that Irma was not a Cat 5 storm? Cat 5 longer than any other storm? What is “cat 2 damage?” The name Irma will be retired. What does that say to you? When was the last time people walked and dogs romped in an empty Tampa Bay?

Might be with limited bandwidth for that one, going to New Mexico on Thursday, but I’ll post what I can. It’ll be six days before we have anything resembling a clue what that storm is going to be doing.

I’m saying that there is something amiss with the data being gathered. The length of time in a category is significant just why? Is it significant if it’s just meandering around in the Atlantic? And, since Tampa was spared the worst effects that were forecast, what would be the significance of an unusually low tide in Tampa Bay? It didn’t rush back in like a tsunami so wasn’t it a rather... positive, if unusual, circumstance in hindsight?

The only reason that it was not as bad as forecast was the grace of God.

It is still having an impact on many other places and maybe all of FL didn’t get a Cat 3 for the whole event.

BIG DEAL!

It was and is still huge. I don’t ever recall seeing a hurricane cover the entire state of FL plus some with the kind of severe weather conditions it produced. It was massive and very powerful and just because FL dodged the bullet on the storm surge, doesn’t mean other places didn’t

Tell that to Barbuda that it was over hyped.

The NWS Has to give the worst case scenario. They have to warn people of the POTENTIAL that any weather system has. People need to know and have the right to know what they could be facing.

We don’t know how much worse it could have been if all those people who evacuated had stayed.

It certainly would have put more people at risk for loss of life and hampering recovery efforts. The aftermath of all those people looking for food and water would have bled the stores dry.

If you think you can do a better job, go do it yourself and show everyone how it ought to be done.

Why won't you answer the question--when was the last time people and dogs walked in an empty Tampa Bay?

I'm adding you to my short list of folks who know so little about hurricanes and their anatomy that you couldn't cover the head of a pin. Is that the same as a pinhead?
