The entire Florida Peninsula has begun to experience Hurricane Irma following landfall at Marco Island. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Prayers for all in the storm path.

Jacksonville.com is showing lots of damage to Ponte Verde.
A lot of fun to be had. Nags Head, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills have built up substantially though, nice to have all the tourist “stuff” nearby but I prefer something a little more wide open and wild. If you haven’t done it before, the Wright Brothers Memorial is cool, outdoors and in the museum. The art deco memorial itself atop a dune is quite striking.
I did some work at Nags Head 2 years ago. Stayed at the HGI on Virginia Dare.
We went through here in 1975 on vacation. Only 2 days.
I will be south of Buxton @ hatteras on the ocean. The port is within a mile or so on the sound.
Long view image is spectacular. Thank you.
Yes I’m down there monthly lately dealing with personal business
It took about ten years or so to rebuild from Camille
It will never be as was from Katrina
The population centers moved inland plus everything is on stilts
I’d wager from Ocean Springs to Waveland it’s about 20 percent rebuilt if that from the Railroad tracks to the beach
I love it down there
It’s southern and cheep
You can live back bay St. Louis or Pass Christian near Brett Favre environs and get a deep water shoreline 3000 sq ft house and deep water dock way under half a million
Maybe even 350-375
Buy a little 20 something Everglades with a couple of nice outboards on it and be offshore in half an hour
Fish Chandelier or Breton
And eat out or fancy shop in New Orleans 45 miles away
Good hospital at Oschners
The purple and gold at Death Valley close by
Emerald water and sugar sand at Destin only 2.5-3 hours at night
I’d live at point clear Alabama too but it’s for rich folks today
Thanks. I saw that. So any freepers in St. Augustine beaches? This is horrible.
Well its official...
some gas stations are out of gas...people are gassing up where they can and there are starting to be lines...people are stocking up on food...
Chattanooga airport has cancelled some of the flights going out for today and tomorrow...
Its cold today...low 50s this morning high will be 63...next week it will be back to the 80s 88 one day..it started raining this morning ...been fairly hard rain and wind this afternoon...
I have a camp stove and a hurricane lamp...with spare propane cans...and plenty of candles...
For snowstorms ...yes we do have them about every 10 years :)...or tornadoes...more frequent...when theres no power..they use the public school just down the road from me for a shelter...about 1/4 mile...I usually walk down and volunteer...
the school is high up near I-75 so it shouldn’t be flooded...if we get enough water on the road closer to town, I might be cut of from town but I should be OK ...however with no power I usually just go into town to McDs or Waffle House for coffee...
I usually keep cash on hand so that’s covered...both cars have a case of bottled water and I have some extra...I have canned food and a few cup of soups etc...also fruit that doesn’t need refrigerating for a few days..and cereal that is tasty as a snack without milk granola works fine (its just a “loose” snack bar but cheaper)...
so I’m ready...
I was on the phone with my brother in Jacksonville most of the night......lights began flickering about 2:00am and then lost all electric soon after....then TV went of course and so they reverted to their port. radio to stay informed...heat is starting to bother there as air conditioners are of course down.
Jacksonville is full of flood waters....breaking records for flooding....and still have water rising now as rescue attempts are in play...... Problem is ‘Jose’ is pushing water into Jacksonville that would otherwise flow out...and the fact they had a severe storm just prior to Irma had saturated the area beforehand.
My family is in good shape overall...but of course waiting for when utilities restored etc. Until then they will sit things out....they are not in any flood zone.....and are well prepared to endure for some time.
Oh my goodness. Imagine the mess we’d be in if not for “vertically intigrated liquid.” And in “high res” to boot.
Thanks :)
6PM here in Aiken County, SC. Winds have slowed substantially but the rain is still cats and dogs.
Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar has the best fish tacos!
If the eye was on the coast, the circulation was impacting the mountains ( and vice versa)
Whatever... the point is: the worst of the forecast called for a turn before Irma had much interaction with Cuba. Thankfully, she did.
“time to start a Jose thread..12z GFS has NJ hit early next week”
Nobody has a clue as to what Jose is going to do after it makes its loop. Could land anywhere from Florida and on up the East coast. Could just go on out in the Atlantic. We should have a better idea by next Friday.
Is there anybody who cares about the people who are looking for gas and ice, who have no power, and no generator? My family was not in a flood zone as has been asserted by certain FReepers (not you, cherry), who are really needing help. The rains came down and have been flooding them. Central Florida is in dire need of help! I’m talking Lake Wales, Winter Haven area. I’m sure there are other FReepers in the same shoes, with family, friends, and loved ones needing assistance. They need gas. They need ice for their food. They are trying to make do with the little they have.
The media doesn’t care. The devastation didn’t happen where they thought it would. So they went home and back to their own comfy lives. Great.
Some FReepers don’t care, because hey, the media overhyped this event, and it’s NO BIG DEAL statistically speaking. Time to move on, or remember the devastation of past events like Camille and Katrina. Irma is a nothing burger event.
Except that some members of my family got flooded with several feet of water. My niece has a home she can’t return to. She can barely make it to the road to her house. It’s buried under water. Her home now looks like she lives on a lake, except she doesn’t! They escaped just fine, but her parents house has no power. She has three children of her own, ages 10-15. Now she needs gas. All of the places that the gas buddy tracker gave us are either incorrect, or they have run out of fuel too. Some places had fuel, but no power, so the pumps don’t work. There are lines to get ice, and it is rationed.
I know they will make do, they always have. My brother and sister in law are very humble and hard working people. (This is my oldest brother, and he and his wife are both very recently retired.) I’m just trying to get them some real help.
If anyone here knows where to find gas in their area (Lake Wales is closest), or of a place to find ice, please let me know. We know the cleanup will take time. We know the power won’t be back on for weeks. We can deal with that some.
Sorry that this turned into a rant of sorts. FReepers are people like me, who generally want to help others. I’d like to thank NautiNurse, and dirtboy, among others who have helped so many with these informative threads.
“Luck” and “Coincidence”...God’s middle names. ;o)
Some folks generate better little persons than they are themselves ;-)
Glad you and yours are okay. Thanks for these threads. Made the ordeal more bearable knowing we had each other’s backs.
Central FL. The gas will go to stations that have electricity. Use GasBuddy. It is updated by users. A green shield with a “-” means no gas/no electricity. Many places are without power. Some have power but are either out of gas or closed(!!!). I believe every place that has power will be open tomorrow. Crews are still working traffic signals in many locations.
It will be cool this evening but hot tomorrow. So hopefully as places with electricity open your family will find ice and gas. I’ve seen people sleeping in their vehicles in gas stations that are closed but with gas and power.
I went out today but it was a hodgepodge of most places being closed due to staffing or power and the places that were open were out of supply. I will be looking for gas in the Odessa/Wesley Chappel area tomorrow. Your family’s area is 50 mi. east from me.
Amen, bb. Take care of you.
