Relics of the past should be preserved, for the sake of history, art, and future generations. But the current frenzy to demand removal of (and in some cases actually violently destroy) Confederate monuments, and even American monuments threatens to erase large swaths of American history -- noble and deplorable alike.
The arts are certainly not immune to the hysteria. In response to a theater in Tennessee cancelling a showing of Gone With the Wind, because of its insensitivity, New York Magazines Vulture published a piece calling the film, a cinematic monument to the Confederacy. However, Angelica Jade Bastien, the essayist, argued that the film should in fact be preserved. Why? When watching Gone With the Wind, white audiences today who are willing to examine their racist failings must also examine how they specifically propagate the mythology that upholds white supremacy, she reasoned.

Even if your ancestors owned slaves, that still wouldn't make you racist.
In some ways.
Play Dixie for me.
I have examined my racists feelings. i hate all liberals equally.
I live in the Pacific Northwest in a pretty much white city, go the to YMCA gym. I’m your basic little old white haired lady, but in great shape. The bruisers at the gym always take heavy weights off equipment so I can put on light weights. I just ask the nearest bruiser, and they could NOT be nicer. Until I asked a black guy I hadn’t seen before. IF looks could KILL I’d be dead...surly, mean-spirited. He did as I asked, but I’ll never ask him again. He ALWAYS looks furious with the world, so jarring for a really nice city and a really nice gym.....
Obama had some program to house black people in white neighborhoods. Of course crime has gone up. OTOH, some of them are really nice, pleasant, neighborly. One Somali family I see now and then walking to the Supermarket is just precious. Tall, thin, walking one behind the other, from mom down to very young kid. Immaculate, polite. I do have high hopes for them because they obviously have high hopes for themselves.
But the guy at the gym looks like he’s working out so he can beat up whitey. None of the white guys is working out so they can beat up blacks.
“This is a downside of a “compassionate” society.
In the Middle East, we have wars that get won by one side, and the losing side declares victory and holds a series of parades.”
Your comments make me think of partly why the Cong won in Vietnam. They needed ones like Walter Cronkite and The Dan to tell the opposite of what was going on there concerning American successes and VC brutality (along with their hit pieces on Nixon to further delegitimize him and his Presidency). Had that not taken place, South Vietnam would probably be still around today and spared of the re-education camps and other forms of Hanoi subjugation and oppression.
The Khmer Rouge in Cambodia probably would not have been so emboldened as well to take over that country and commit it’s absolutely unspeakable horrors.
>>white audiences today who are willing to examine their racist failings must also examine how they specifically propagate the mythology that upholds white supremacy,
I look at the civilization around me and its roots and the only mythology I can find is the myth of cultural equivalence. How many more thousands of years would it have taken for Africa, North America, or South America to have built the equivalent of a 17th century Venice if the Europeans (or alternately, Asians) had not shown up to bring civilization to them?
Not nearly as insulting as the NFL telling their fans that they’re racists (by not stopping the National Anthem crap), since, as they’re learning, something like 98% of the are white, and most of those whites are not the kind of people that enjoy being called racist.
In this case, while their audience is certainly white, they are also Leftists. But even so, there is a limit...and NY Magazine should be surprised if they find a bunch of cancellations hitting them.
Frankly, a few of my ancestors did own slaves. They paid for it with the lives of their kinsmen lost during the many battles. They paid for it, during Reconstruction. Funny how we don’t hear much about the looting (or the polite Northern term, appropriation) and other inhumane acts. Those in the southern states were treated horribly during that time.
I’ve never owned a slave in my life. I didn’t personally inherit any plantations, either.
I owe nothing but my taxes, of which a large part goes to welfare.
I think that’s more than enough.
Be gone From Me!
‘Bout sums it Up!
MY ancestors all arrived in North America between 1846-1869. None had slaves, and all opposed it.
One branch in central Missouri left that state in 1860 because of all the guerilla attacks against German immigrants who were against slavery. They were the forerunners of he KKK. Catholics were not welcome in any slave state, and they paid dearly by attacks against them.
One of my immigrants was in the GAR. Does that sound like I am responsibile for slavery?
Enough of the racist talk.
When you are White you are right
Erase American History !?!
Tear down the Symbols...
The Fact that it Happened
Still Remains.
Have you seen the signs that let you know if you are silent, you are complicit. Sounds like bullying to me.
Well, if you’re going to fail at something - failing at being racist is a good one for the list.
White shaming is a particularly nasty, virulent form of racism that has taken hold solely for the political power it confers. Shun its practitioners as the filth they are and eventually the problem goes back to the hatred-obsessed fringe whence it came. That may take a while.
No offense but your post illustrates how little the average poster here understands black culture and race
I’m from Mississippi
