Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Is there anything in Florida that ISN’T a low lying area? I mean, elevations here are measured in inches, not feet.
I grew up in West Virginia, where the concept of “head to higher ground” made an awful lot of sense. Higher ground to me means go to Austin......

LOL! I recall my niece teaching me to drive a stick shift in St. Pete. She said she was going to take me to “a hill” or “the hill” to practice. We got to there and I asked her how she could tell it was a hill. (It wasn’t.)

All of the points you mention favor early assessment, recognition, and action.
Keeping one’s tank full is just common sense. So is keeping one’s important records easily transportable, and having window protection pre-cut and ready all the time. This is just another Ant vs Grasshopper pageant.

I feel so bad for all these folks. I read this thread last night & it literally brought tears to my eyes! I wish I could open my home to everyone who is trying to get out of danger. The one person that was looking for shelter for 4 adults & 4 cats broke my heart.

I live in Venice FL....Finally put up all the hurricane crap...If this goes up the middle of the state you can forget Florida Juice...They will probably blame this on Trump
