Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

“Not many structures one can find over 40 feet high that are strong enough to survive 200 mile winds.”

I haven’t seen any reporting of larger than 12’ surge and 185mph winds. Jose is due to be a CAT 3, not a CAT 5 and it’s due to pass further north of St. Marten than Irma.

The surge won’t be on the south side of these islands because the south is in the lee of the storm when it’s at its strongest. The surge and winds will be on the north of these islands. On the south shore the wind will be offshore, pushing the water out. No waves. Getting below the crest of elevation protects from flying debris -a very big concern when looking for ad hoc shelter in a hurricane. They’ll only get onshore winds after it’s passed and they’ll be less and not last long. I’ve been in this situation before on another island.

The forecasted 2PM Tuesday storm position looks to be over top of the smokies, so yes. Also recognize that hurricane force winds could reach Atlanta, so this thing is going to be potent for a while.

At some yet-to-be-determined point in/near Tennessee, the storm will slow or stall before finally getting swept out... so don’t sleep on it: flood-prone areas need to be aware.

If Miami had to be evacuated, they would have had to start 2 days ago.

You’re right. My brother and SIL had no choice but to stay they are both first responders. They are in the Broward County Ft. Lauderdale area.

GFS has it going into the smokies, then doing a 180 degree turn into Mississippi. Weather is “fun” and interesting (From a certain perspective), too bad its destructive though.

I am sure they will shelter in a secure place if (Hope not) the “poop hits the fan”. Also hope they were given the time to prep their residence/secured supplies for themselves.

The actual position tonight is slightly (0.2 lat) south of the NHC forecasted line from last night... lends further credence to the “more west” solution.

good one...lol...

off topic a little, but does anybody have suggestion for making a donation for the Houston victims, etc?...I really do not want to donate to the Red Cross if I can help it...I want an organization that doesn't have a half million dollar executive to pay off at its helm...

***Just something about the name alone scared me.***

I have to tell you, I had a very dear family friend by the name of Irma. She was the sweetest, kindest woman you might ever know, very grandmotherly. Knitted baby booties and a sweater for our firstborn, then other little knitted outfits for the others. I imagine my Irma is smiling sweetly down on us, and doing her darned best to request a peaceful Florida landing for the storm bearing her name.

Just curious...watching aerial views of FL gridlocked freeways.....

All of the north bound lanes are gridlocked....the southbound lanes are WIDE open...maybe a few cars traveling south.

WHY ON EARTH have they not opened the southbound lanes (except maybe one lane) to northbound/evacuating traffic?????

Texas learned this lesson during Rita. They now have all west bound AND east bound lanes of I-10 opened to the west, when a mandatory evac is happening, from Houston.
