Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Love it.”Price gouging”.
It’ called “supply and demand”.
If you stop it you get instant shortages. No incentive to add extra flights, seats, or anything else people need.

Dear Lord.. The Weather Channel just accidentally showed a graphic of Hurricane José’s track.. It looks like it’s headed straight for NJ!

Looks like the Floridians are going to visit us here in the Appalachian foot hills. Hopefully we get spared the tornado’s and other fun stuff.

When you do it to take undo advantage of an emergency, that is price gouging. It is wrong, it is rightfully illegal.

After making fun of meteorologists for years for their sketchy at best weather predictions, I have to say they were exactly right, almost to the hour, on predicting Hurricane Harvey..... so pay attention to their announcements. Seems surreal that two weeks ago we were dealing with this very thing here in Texas and now will be watching you all in Florida. Stay safe!

Definitely worst case for T&C, they are getting the dirty side of the storm with huge storm surge and highest wins.

That’s something, but Andrew was an unusually small storm, smaller than a lot of tropical storms.

Welcome to FR! We’re a funny, cranky, kindhearted bunch. Full of opinions and beliefs. We love America. In spite of everything and because of everything.

I’m in Orlando, where we’re expecting a helluva storm in a couple of days. No fun, but nothing like S.Fl. is anticipating.

If Andrew had passed about 20 miles north of where it did, the damage easily probably would have been tripled.

Mom says no one she is meeting, and she has been out and about every day this past week. (she has been in remission until last week and still drives) is preparing. She is trying to tell them this is not a “normal” hurricane. She says life in Sanford is normal. She says many have never been through something like this, so are not taking it seriously.
