Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/07/2017 8:09:47 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

I’ve been wondering if boat lifts, from the Gulf side of mid Fl, weren’t possible, since roads are gridlocked and gas is all but gone.

That’s a long haul for emergency and utility crew redeployment.

Where are you seeing this?

They sure haven’t said that on the Weather Channel. What is the source of that forecast?

There are no good outcomes for this storm.

But I gotta hope it keeps going west, losing power over Cuba, and then turning north into the Gulf. If it turns north immediately after entering the Gulf and starts moving faster north, maybe it won’t have time to strengthen a whole lot.

That’s what I’m praying for.

I think we are seeing landfall in Cuba right now.

I am on record, from the beginning of the first thread on Irma, that this cane wanted some beignets and coffee w. chicory.

Looks pretty run down to begin with so any impact will be destructive.

I've heard that, because productivity in Cuba went more-or-less to zero when the communists took over, much of what you see in Cuba (e.g., buildings and cars) is pre-Castro. (Note the architectural decoration on some buildings in the picture.) Many of these buildings were presumably made before whatever passed for building standards in the communist era; and many buildings that aren't up to minor hurricanes probably blew down long ago. (Morón is one of the older towns in the area.) However, I don't know if this place has ever been tested at Cat 4 or 5.

Not a model. Actual sat gif. It looks like the eye is getting close to the Cuban coast. I don't know about what this does to the turn, but I understand the more it hits Cuba the more energy is sapped and disorganized.

Jacksonville Beach city crews built what are essentially sand dams to keep storm surge out of streets, protect dunes....

“Why is Caputo talking to him?”

I always believed Cavuto was a Jeb fan from during the campaign. And you’re right; Jeb is irrelevant. Less than irrelevant — a true buffoon.

Some were built to higher building code standards. Probably the newer ones. Also their location. If they are in areas that might be in danger from storm surge.

My husband was with a children’s hospital in Tampa Bay area. They just built a new facility - built like a fort. Generators took up the entire 5th floor (can’t flood) and could fully run the hospital for a month, I think. Most of the windows had metal roll down shields. Water and fuel storage tanks. It was like a city. Really amazing.

Needless to say, he always had to be there through any storms.

Haiti is sort of like that.....the garbage alone ‘on their beaches’ BEFORE they were hit looks similar to the garbage after. Hard to tell the difference in some places.

Generally speaking it’s similar to the natives of Islands who build shacks.....storm hits and they simply put up another shack. Meanwhile the revenue flows to the government leaders to “rebuild” which never happens.
