Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

The scary part is that even with the eye wall just west of Miami, that means the most dangerous part of the storm will be literally over Miami itself. And that will put the highly vulnerable Miami Beach area in danger of very high winds, very heavy rain and storm surges. Those Art Deco style buildings built between 1923 and 1943 may not survive this storm.

To go way off topic here, it is apparent that JimRob needs to implement a sense of humor test to posters: require a certain score on a multiple choice tests with examples of sarcasm, irony, hyperbole, ridicule, etc.

I have observed Freerepublic has more up to date information than any of the tv/cable broadcasters. Their information is hours if not days old.

If they are withholding or intentionally slow to disseminate data then shame on them, it is not their decision or place.

MSNBC would have been more useful if they just played cute puppy youtube videos.

kudos to everyone providing real data here on FR.

(In my PAN AM Stewardess outfit, facing the crowd)

I just heard that the airport would close on Saturday, I think it was late afternoon.

Problem would be getting a flight.

We’re non evac, so we’ve got boards up, and everything is as secure as we can make it. Problem with this storm will be if it makes it off shore to the Gulf, that would not be good. As it stands now, coming up over all the land, by the time it gets to us it will be diminished as far as wind. But ever update takes it further west, and the Gulf is so warm. My husband went diving last week and the temp was up around 90 degrees. That would be bad, it needs to stay over land.

Fair warning. Knock off the off-topic extracurriculars regarding this thread. And that includes nastygram freepmails. If you get one, don’t post it in the forum, forward it to Admin Moderator or Jim Robinson for review.

If you can’t say it in the open forum, don’t say it via freepmail.

I tried being polite and that does not seem to be working. Can’t we all just stick to the topic in question in the face of a looming disaster?

Thanks for the update. How crazy...with the jet fuel issue.

I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed, too AND saying prayers for you.

I was on the optimistic end of the forecast.

Trust me, I’m concerned and being pro-active!
Just came up from the basement putting 2 liter coke bottles of water in my chest freezer as it’s only 3/4 filled. Gunna freeze additional ones for my two frigs in case we lose power.
I’ll canvas the yard tomorrow and inspect gutters and make sure my French ditches are deluge ready. Sunday I’ll tuck away the outdoor potted plants.

Every little bit helps.
I stay in perpetual “prepper” mode.

Do not post here again.

You're many years too late for that.

Jeeze...

Company insurance guy shocked me after a 14 foot fall onto concrete, caused me three broken vertebra, muscle and nerve damage (all healed pretty well, considering).

He said statistically, 60 percent of people who fall 10 feet...die.

Be careful out there, folks

HWRF intensity model has it hitting Cat 5 again in that location. And note the size of the eye compared to the width of the Florida Peninsula. Wilma had a somewhat smaller eye but went diagonally across the Peninsula. This one could grind up the entire length with much stronger winds than Irma:
