President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America's debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party's leaders.
...brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.
The session painted a vivid portrait of discord at the highest ranks of the Republican Party. After an angry August that Trump spent lobbing attacks at fellow Republicans, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...
At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence. ...
Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer." He didn't mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present...
"I think the deal will be very good," Trump added.
Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful." He issued no public statement on the final deal...
The deal struck Wednesday at the White House promises to speed the $7.9 billion Hurricane Harvey aid bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday...The debt ceiling and government funding extensions will be attached.

He said that Reagan compromised all the time, not the non-sequitur you posed in response. You’re conflating two things; stick to the idea of compromise and you might get a meaningful answer.
Ryan can’t be trusted but he DID get an 8 billion relief package approved yesterday.
This should have been... here is your money for Texas .
NOW..let’s negotiate from a position of power...what will you give us Dems.
Instead....
So what did Trump get in return for making a deal with Schumer and Pelosi?
What you need to realize is that there is nothing whatsoever in the U.S. government that will “favor conservatives.” “Conservatives” are one of the smallest factions of the Balkanized, Ineffective Republican Party. What do they have in their “Conservative” Caucus...39-40 members?
If you are thinking about this in terms of ideology, you are destined to be a permanently unhappy person. The “Conservative” ideology is not going to win this or any other battle of gevernance. It didn’t win the battle back in Reagan’s day when, as an ideology, it was far stronger than it is today.
Ideology is not going to preserve this nation or improve its governance. You should start looking beyond that, otherwise it will appear to your eyes that the losing streak will go on forever.
That my friend is a great analysis. Thanks for your patience in sticking with me. this the FR I respect. Reasoned debate free of name calling.
I think we’re seeing the General Kelly impact as Chief of Staff:
“If President Trump’s trip to North Dakota on Wednesday was designed to bully the state’s lone Democratic lawmaker, Heidi Heitkamp, into supporting his tax reform plans, he may have boosted her re-election campaign instead.
Trump invited Sen. Heitkamp to travel with him to Bismarck on Air Force One and called her a “good woman” after summoning her onto the event stage outside an oil refinery.
For a Democrat fighting to keep her seat next year in a state Trump won by 36 points, the senator’s day could not have gone much better. Trump’s tax push has yet to be written as legislation, and a vote still remains a hypothetical. Heitkamp’s appearance with the president, then, cost her little in exchange for what amounted to an endorsement of her willingness to work across the aisle.”

The bottom portion of that square has a fake tunnel pasted into it. It’s very obvious, you can see it.
Think the sign is fake also.
Fox Business just said — trish regan-—that they got ~15.6 billion.
Wonder if that’s why Trump tossed Ryan
dont know. ..it just the beginning..they will need much more
and now we have the east coast who will likely need money
300 billion+ before it’s over. I’m thinking irma looks like she’s more north than the media plots are showing. Can’t figure the difference out.
I guess what I would say to that is “so what”?
Here’s the problem you need to solve if you are an ideologue: Conservatives have proven - for decades - that they both will not and more importantly yet, can not deliver majority votes. If you want absolute status quo from where we stand today - no action, no change on anything, the absolute obstruction on any action of any kind - then the conservative ideology as implemented in practice today (and for the past decades) can work for you.
However, Trump was elected to take action - and since conservatives are both incapable ( they are far too small in number to do anything) and unwilling (they are of a mindset that it’s much easier for them to find aspects of things they don’t like than to swallow those to accomplish other things they generally like), they become unusable to anyone actually desiring accomplishments. Once conservatives learn to accept warts and blemishes on their prom date, they will have a better chance at being effective.
that figure is mind blowing.
Mother Nature has to teach us a lesson every once in awhile about who rules the roost.
Let’s get in bed with the Dems and sing Kumbaya. That is what I am seeing today on FR.
It’s the globalist neocons with the warts and not Trump.
Lots running away from her right now in Florida. I’d be tempted to move. I suppose they’re used to it. For me, it’s a good reason not to live there.
I’d rather have a German division in front of me than a French division behind me... ~ Patton
Sadly, some people care more about the folks they've attached themselves to, rather than the ideals and principles that those folks supposedly espoused at some point.
Wins for Trump are nice, but wins for America are more important.
(Unfortunately, I'm not sure, at this point in this fight, which of the 3 main actors - Congressional GOP, Congressional Dems, or Trump - are fighting for conservative ideals at all.)
