President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America's debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party's leaders.
...brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.
The session painted a vivid portrait of discord at the highest ranks of the Republican Party. After an angry August that Trump spent lobbing attacks at fellow Republicans, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...
At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence. ...
Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer." He didn't mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present...
"I think the deal will be very good," Trump added.
Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful." He issued no public statement on the final deal...
The deal struck Wednesday at the White House promises to speed the $7.9 billion Hurricane Harvey aid bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday...The debt ceiling and government funding extensions will be attached.

Senate votes 72-25 to defeat Sasse motion to strip non-disaster related items from Harvey bill
“@MKhan47 Just in: Sen. Ben Sasse will file an amendment to reject the “Pelosi-Schumer-Trump” deal and instead pass a clean version for Harvey relief. 12:00 PM - Sep 7, 2017”
Awesome! This is what should have been taking place to start with: a clean Harvey relief bill that isn’t attached to anything.
“Simple solution, GOP, pass a damn budget.”
The eGOP, a do-nothing congress.
“Senate votes 72-25 to defeat Sasse motion to strip non-disaster related items from Harvey bill”
No surprise.
As long as they stay in power they could care less I suspect. Trump does need to keep throwing gas on the flames of these two turds when they screw up and pressuring their caucuses to remove them from power.
Sadly what will replace them is just as inept and cowardly. The Republican congress is full of cowards. I think Trump is trying anything and everything to get these bloody fools to do something before the birds come and cover them with leaves.
As for making a deal with the Democrats, you people are surprised! Really? I knew Trump would make deals with anyone including Democrats at some point and it would piss me off but Hillary would have pissed me off 100% of the time. I am not happy with the deal but it is what it is.
I’m not saying the Senate will oppose him. Just the opposite.
What I’m trying to say is this will put a boat load of pressure
on McConnell to change that fillibuster rule. Trump proved
yesterday that the GOP Senate at 52 votes don’t have the power.
Changing the fillibuster rule will give them that power.
And as I mentioned, DC is all about power.
So McConnel has a choice. He can continue the fillibuster rule
and Trump will work around them.
Or he can change the fillibuster rule and that will give incentive
for the GOP Senators to stick together even with a slight majority.
Trump could have easily gotten hurricane relief. No one was going to deny it.
So the question is what exactly did he get from Schumer and Pelosi in his debt negotiations.
NOTHING
That’s the way Dems play ball.
They have the leverage anyway...because they can deliver their rank and file as votes. The problem is far more fundamental than the stuff you are getting excited about - the separate issues here and there.
The fundamental problem is that Republicans cannot govern because they refuse to unify. They can never create a majority for anything except what the corporatist donors pay them to do. If you are going to fret over particular issues, you’d better first fret over the inability of Republicans to form a governing majority in Congress.
Don’t blame Trump for dealing with those who know how to make the process work and can deliver the votes to do it. Blame your factions in Republican Party that make it impossible for them to be a governing majority.
“Trump could have easily gotten hurricane relief.”
Really? Who in either House of Congress was pushing for it as a clean bill prior to Sasse today?
Why would Lyin Ryan & the Turtle agree to it? They’ve been active obstructionists since President Trump took office save for Gorsech.
“So the question is what exactly did he get from Schumer and Pelosi in his debt negotiations”
Those who wish to remain blinded by their own eqo, most certainly will stay blind. President Trump got a 3 month CR from the RATs while the GOPe wanted a 18 month CR so the issue wouldn’t come up in the 2018 elections. Now it will be an issue in 2018 as it should be.
That’s a lot more than the “nothing” you see.
Ryan passed it yesterday. 8 billion
And yet, for some strange reason, we continue to vote the rats into office!
LoL I just heard an audio clip of Ryan on the news sounding conciliatory and submissive to Trump. Ryan, “all he (Trump) was doing was having bipartisan moment...” in the face of the hurricane emergencies.
Neither you or I know what he got in return...unless you are some kind of All seeing savant.
And what he got in return is completely irrelevant to the real problem at hand.
Perhaps what he got in return was a highlight of the complete ineffectiveness of the Republican Party and All of its members. Perhaps what he got was the greatest insult a President could ever give to a dysfunctional, corrupt party that should join the ash heap of history...because of both its rank incompetence and its extreme corruption. Democrats are just as corrupt...but they are far more competent than the Republican Party.
And if I were in his shoes, taking down the Republican Party after what it has shown us this year is not a half-bad return on his action.
Trump should have gone on TV (or even twitter or... FREE REPUBLIC!!!) and announced to the people that he was asking for a clean spending bill for ONLY Houston disaster relief and to tell the people to call their congress critters and demand they stop PLAYING POLITICS with it by insisting they would only sign it if it was included in this or that other bill.
They people would have responded.
I am not surprised at all :)
It’s his MO.
He acts concerned.
Then he says something nice about Trump.
Then elsewhere he backstabs him..
Daca.
Then there is great effort but no progress.
He is part of the cabal attempting to take down Trump.
Taking down the Republican Party by cooperating with the Dems will not favor conservatives. Dems do not favor conservatives. It’s like a DEM president..because you sure aren’t going to get conservative policies out of DEMS.
So last time around we are suppose to get concessions due to Trump’s 58D chess.
He capitulated again. You claim he got something
I guess we will see.
